Seda/Silk: Mawata vs. silk cap

A seda continua a ser fiada. Não sei como se diz em português, mas vinha quase toda sob a forma de mawata squares, com excepção daquela que estou a fia agora, que vem em silk caps. (Caso algum(a) leitor(a) saiba traduzir, fico muito grata)./ Silk is being spun. Most was bought as mawata squares (also called silk hankies), but the mauve-coloured one I'm spinning now is from silk caps.

Comparados com os silk caps, os quadrados de seda (mawata), mais pequenos, satisfazem a vontade de ver algo pronto mais depressa, porque se esticam (para fiar) mais depressa também. E separam-se mais direitinhos uns dos outros (é por isso que eu vou tirando cada camada de seda do interior do silk cap: assim a parte desarranjada fica escondida :) ). De resto, não há diferenças na fiação. / Comparison: mawata squares are much smaller than silk caps, so they are better to satisfy any sudden urge to see the spun single right away, as they are faster to draft/stretch. And they separate into neater, nicer-looking layers (when spinning a silk cap, I take each layer from the inside, in order to hide the mess ;) In fact, I turn it inside-out, remove one layer, tuck the mess, and turn outside-in again). The spinning experience is otherwise similar.

Quando terminar estas, fica a faltar a seda em branco cru. São 50 g, e ainda não sei se hei-de fiar assim em cru, ou tingi-la primeiro de alguma cor. Mas talvez me atire mesmo a fiar em cru, e depois se verá o que faço com toda a seda. / Now I'm spinning these mauve/brown/vaguely purple silk (not blue as it seems in the picture) caps. And then I'll spin 50 g of natural-coloured mawata squares. Or I'll dye them before spinning, but I feel inclined to spin them the colour they are, and then I'll decide what to do with the double-plied handspun :)

Por fim, os números, ou a prova de que a espessura com que fio a seda é irregular / Finally, some measurements that show how irregular is the thickness of my handspun:

9g rosa e azul / pink and blue: 26 m

11-12g rosa / pink: 50 m
7g laranja / orange: 21 m
4g verde / green: 14 m

50 g branco cru (ainda por fiar) / Natural white unspun

Serviço Público: O que é caxemira / Answering the searches: Cashmere

Lately, my blog has been having lots of hits from Google Searches for "what is cashmere", but in Portuguese, and in several ortographies. As all these searches come from Brasil, the following will be written only in Portuguese, sorry.

Não sei porquê, ultimamente têm vindo cá ter muitas pesquisas no Google à procura de "caxemira", "o que é caxemira" ou inúmeras variantes ortográficas. A mais frequente é aliás "o que é cashmere", curiosamente.

Como escrevi num comentário antigo (onde as pesquisas estão a ir parar),

Caxemira é um tipo de cabra. Esta cabra tem dois tipos de pêlos, tal como muitos mamíferos: os pêlos de guarda, exteriores, eriçados e duros, e o subpêlo, lanoso, macio, leve e quente. O subpêlo desta cabra é especialmente macio, leve e quente, isola bem da humidade, e e por isso é muito procurado como fibra. É a este subpêlo que se chama caxemira.

A caxemira é cara porque é muito procurada, porque as cabras caxemira não são assim tao frequentes, mas sobretudo porque recolher a caxemira é um processo demorado, porque não queremos pêlos de guarda duros e ásperos (tão duros que servem para fazer escovas!) no meio do subpêlo macio. Então, se a cabra caxemira for tosquiada, é depois preciso eliminar os pêlos de guarda, que é um processo demorado, ou então o subpêlo é recolhido penteando a cabra na época da mudança do pêlo, o que é mais demorado mas permite a passagem de menos pêlos de guarda. Seja como for, é preciso limpar a fibra várias vezes até ela ficar livre de pêlos de guarda.

Além do mais, as cabras não dão muito subpêlo, ao contrário das ovelhas que podem dar imensa lã.

Alguns comentários extra: acho sempre graça à expressão "de lana caprina" para significar coisa de pouco valor, sem grande importância, dado que a cabra caxemira dá uma fibra que é bastante cara e procurada por permitir fazer tecidos simultaneamente muito finos, muito leves e muito isolantes/quentes (as fibras animais mais caras, ao que julgo saber, são as de iaque e de vicunha, bastante raras, que conseguem ser ainda mais isolantes/quentes e mais leves).

Um pouco na linha dos "7 Quick Takes" que tenho visto por aí: / Somewhat similar to the "7 Quick Takes" posts that I've been reading around the blogosphere:

1) Talvez se lembrem de que já vi muitas sequelas (2as e 3as partes) de filmes sem ter visto a primeira. No Sábado passado fui mais além: vi o 4º filme de uma série sem ter visto nenhum dos anteriores. / Maybe you know that I've watched a lot of sequels (2nd and 3rd parts of movies) without watching the first one. Last Saturday I reached a new level: I watched the 4th film of a series I had never watched before :)

2) Fiar dá gozo. Não é uma actividade criativa, é até algo que se faz com o cérebro quase desligado, e no entanto satisfaz o lado criativo. /Spinning is very pleasurable. While not being a creative activity (it's actually the closest I can get to not thinking at all), t satisfies my creative side :)

3) O cansaço é um círculo/ciclo? vicioso. Mas vou quebrá-lo. "Deitar cedo e cedo erguer..." / Fatigue is a vicious circle (or is it cycle?). I will break it. "Early to bed and early to rise..."

Por culpa da Ana ;) , ontem retomei algo que tinha começado noutro Verão. Eu a fiar em público, à noite, numa esplanada, ela a tricotar em público na mesma esplanada. E mais dois gelados :)

It's all her fault ;) Yesterday I grabbed a work in progress I had abandoned in a previous summer. She knit in public, I spun in public, at night, on an open-air table of a café (how do you say "esplanada" in English, dear bilingual / multilingual readers?). And two ice-creams at our table :)

Não faço ideia onde encontrei este meme. Penso que ficou perdido nos rascunhos porque pode ser tão pessoal ou tão impessoal quanto eu quiser. No rascunho dizia para escrever 6 coisas relativas a cada data, mas é muito, fico-me pelas 4. E ainda nada de trabalhos manuais... (a partir daqui só em inglês, desculpem)

I have no idea where I found this meme, that can be very personal or not personal at all. I tried to strike a balance between sharing a bit of my life but not too much (this is a public blog and I wouldn't feel comfortable). It had 6 items on each entry, but I decided to share only 4! (no crafting to share yet...)

20 years ago (1989)
1) I was at school (of course) in a class where I didn't really fit in. Was a clumsy teenager with glasses, a haircut that made me look way older (I finally had my long long hair cut that year, no more pigtails for me), nerdy and a bit weird.
2) Was really surprised, and I must admit, hopeful, with the fall of Berlin Wall and huge changes in Eastern Europe.
3) Soon discovered that after all human beings hadn't changed that much.
4) Thought that at 30 I would be married and have quite a bunch of kids. And be a bit old ;)

10 years ago (1999)
1) Last year of my licenciatura. Which means I finished my undergraduate degree (5 years). Still nerdy, but among nerds :) Instead of glasses, I had contact lenses, my hair was longer again, and I was no longer a teenager, so a bit less clumsy.
2) Had lots of plans that didn't go quite as planned.
3) Had become a Christian the previous year, but hadn't found "my" church yet.
4) Thought that at 30 I would be in another country doing exciting things.

5 years ago (2004)
1) Moved into the house where I live now.
2) Had become a Catholic (I still am one :) ), found a parish, joined the choir and got confirmed.
3) Was slowly starting a relationship with one of my close friends.
4) Do not remember what I thought I would be doing at 30...

1 year ago (2008)
1) Finished my dissertation. Worked in a (sort of) conventional job.
2) Still live in the same house, still am a Catholic, still am on the same parish and on the same choir.
3) But the relationship ended (on friendly terms).
4) Was already older than 30, and thought that after all being 30-something is still being young ;)

Today
1) Who knows!...

O que tenho a acrescentar em 2009 / What I wish to add about it now:

- O meu telemóvel novo tira fotos bem melhores que as da máquina digital gratuita que eu usava antes. / The free digital camera I had a few years ago was not great, to say the least. My new cell phone can take better pictures.

- Ainda não forrei a saca das agulhas, apesar de isso a tornar muito pouco prática. / The needle bag is still without a lining, so the needles come through the holes of the knit fabric.

- Fartei-me da meia de restinhos, desmanchei-a e comecei outro projecto com as linhas (link só para quem está no Ravelry). É no chamado crochet tunisino, que se faz com uma só agulha de barbela como as tradicionais portuguesas de tricot. Não faço ideia que vou fazer com ele, mas serve para aprender. Se for o caso desmancho-o também. / I got tired of the sock, so I frogged it and used the yarn to start another project (Ravelry login needed). It's Tunisian crochet (Portuguese traditional knitting needles are like Tunisian crochet needles, except that we knit with a pair, of course). I have no idea what this project will turn out to be, but at least I am learning a new craft. If I get tired of it I'll frog it too.

1) A minha saca de agulhas. Fi-la em 2005, com um novelo de linha para meias e mais um restinho de linha cinzenta, e precisa de um forro!/My bag of knitting needles. I knit it in 2005, using a ball of sock yarn and a bit ofe grey yarn, and it needs a lining!

2) Uma foto já não muito recente, e com cores ainda piores, de umas meias feitas com vários restinhos de linha para meias. /An old and awful picture of a sock in progress using yarn leftovers.

O post da Rosa explica muito bem o que é. Usando as palavras dela, "quem como eu tiver família portuense tem mais motivos ainda para lá ir, mas penso que mesmo sem família de lá não deixará de ser interessante ver fotos antigas (por ano, por exemplo).

Já por lá andei à pesquisa de retratos de parentes (e encontrei dois), e dado que continuam a acrescentar fotos é de prever que eu volte a ir lá.

Está mais fresco (e ainda vai descer nos próximos dias) e portanto é boa altura para fazer limpezas e arrumações. No caso, estou a testar cores novas aqui no blogue. Os links, bonequinhos e etc. laterais ficaram guardados num ficheiro de backup, depois decido se os ponho ou não. Para já este template pré-feito: é simples, mas ainda não me habituei a tanto verde! Se forem aparecendo mudanças, não é de admirar.

It's cooler (it will get even cooler in the next few days) and so I decided to tidy up a bit this blog. First thing is trying some new colours! The old sidebar links, toys and other things are safely tucked away in a backup file, I can re-add them later. All this green is simpler, but I'm not used to it yet. Don't be surprised if I end up trying a lot of different looks here.

Calor / Too hot

Ficou demasiado calor de repente (hoje quando saí para almoçar estavam 30ºC), e dou por mim a ver sucessivamente o site da meteorologia, na esperança de ver números mais na casa dos 20 e poucos graus que mentalmente espero no princípio de Maio (senão, terei de esperar temperaturas na casa dos 40ºC no Verão, o que eu detesto).

Por este andar nunca mais retomo os meus trabalhos começados, quase todos demasiado quentes para sequer os tirar das caixas.

It's just too hot for May, these last few days (today at lunch it was around 30 degrees Celsius). I check and recheck the local weather forecast, hoping to see future maximum temperatures in the 20-25ºC span... I hope it will get cooler soon, otherwise I will have to brace myself for a summer around 40ºC, which I hate.

Almost all my UFOs are warm, too warm for me even to think of them, so no signs of crafting yet.

33. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS? Not necessarily happy endings, but I simply do not go to horror/scary movies. I can handle dark movies (except if I'm going through a bad phase, then I avoid them), even very heavy scripts, even depressive scripts, but I prefer not to see very graphic violence. If a movie I see has occasional graphic scenes, I cover my eyes or do not look at the screen until the scene is over. I have been known to watch full 5 minutes of a film covering everything except the subtitles. I suppose I prefer happier endings or bittersweet endings, maybe not fairytale endings though.

O que tenho a acrescentar ao tema em 2009/What I wish to add about it now:

- Já tinha feito este teste em miúda (com 12 anos), na escola, em Têxteis, mas lembrava-me mal dos resultados. Excepto do nylon, que derrete. Usei muitas vezes esse conhecimento para queimar pontas de cordas de nylon e evitar que desfiassem. / When I was 12 I learned of this test for the 1st time, at school (I had Textiles classes), but I did not remember most of the results. I only knew that nylon melts, which I used to finish nylon ropes (light a match, put the frayed ends of the rope near said match, watch the frayed ends melt into a blob)

- Quem já queimou cabelo sabe muito bem reconhecer o cheiro de uma fibra animal a arder. / If you have ever burned hair, that's the smell of an animal fiber burning.

- Ainda não sei a composição da linha, mas sempre a usei no Lizard Ridge, que por agora está parado. (A bouclé não, essa permanece na stash à espera de inspiração). Still no idea about the composition of the unknown yarn, but I did use it on my Lizard Ridge, which is not finished yet. The bouclé is still stashed, waiting for inspiration.

A propósito da linha desconhecida (a última destas), lá lhe fiz (várias vezes!) o teste do fogo, e para comparar queimei outras linhas de composição desconhecida. Ardeu como lã (ardeu com chama pequena e com cheiro intenso e característico a cabelo queimado, apagou-se pouco depois de retirar a chama, e o resíduo queimado eram bolinhas leves pretas que se esmigalhavam entre os dedos sem dificuldade deixando uma cinza preta que, novamente, cheirava a cabelo queimado). Não tem o toque típico da lã, mas arde textualmente como lã. Vou usá-la no Lizard Ridge. Quanto à outra (a bouclé azul), ainda não decidi se a quero guardar para fazer uma estola para mim ou para a minha mãe, ou se quero usá-la aqui.

Também pedi opiniões no fórum acima referido, e antes que se percam vou copiar os excertos mais interessantes para aqui (infelizmente estou com pouco tempo, não vou traduzir para português).

Sobre o burn test, dois avisos: 1) obviamente, cuidado com o lume, dado que algumas fibras ardem depressa e com grande chama (não a lã, mas sim as fibras vegetais e sobretudo algumas artificiais). 2) Cuidado ao tentarem esmigalhar os resíduos queimados: os de fibras naturais arrefecem depressa, mas o resíduo queimado de acrílico permanece quente durante algum tempo depois de apagado (fiz duas pequenas queimaduras à conta disso...)

Quero voltar a escrever no blogue, mas não tenho ideias novas nem tenho feito muito nos meus projectos de malha e crochet. Sendo assim, para já vou pôr etiquetas nos posts antigos, e publicar finalmente os posts que estão guardados como rascunhos. Se tudo correr bem, a inércia (de movimento ;-) ) há-de me manter a blogar, e quem sabe retomo alguns dos trabalhos entre mãos!

Ravelry e meias / Ravelry and socks

Olá. Rapidamente e sem fotos, depois hei-de actualizar com mais informação e fotos:

1) Acabei (finalmente) as Jaywalkers. Em agulha 2mm, claro que nunca mais acabava. Ficaram um pouco apertadas, e com pouca elasticidade. Ou seja, consigo calçá-las, mas causam desconforto. Veremos o que decido. Será que alguém na minha família próxima tem os pés mais pequenos que eu?

2) Comecei o primeiro par de meias do SKP2008. Estou a usar a linha em tons pastel. A textura fica um pouco escondida, mas eu estava com tanta vontade de usar aquela linha que não me arrependo.

3) Estou no Ravelry com o nome knittingthrough.

Sock Knitters Pentathlon

Quando andava na faculdade, tinha um colega que fazia pentatlo (caso tropeces aqui, olá, Buli!). Eu nunca fui muito atlética, mas agora que estou mesmo quase a acabar a tese, achei boa ideia entrar numa competição de fazer meias! Como se vê aqui, tenho linhas que dão para 12 ou 13 pares de meias: um em riscas pastel com seda, um em riscas escuras com brilhos, dois de riscas sobre os tons de Outono e um de riscas entre o azul e o verde seco, um de algodão com riscas cinza e bege, dois mesclados em tons de Outono (fora as Jaywalkers azuis que nunca mais acabo!), um mesclado sobre o vermelho, um de linha pintada à mão rosa e azul escura e dois mais grossos com riscas verdes ou avermelhadas. O pior é que são todas mescladas ou de riscas: se decidirem usar modelos muito trabalhados se calhar não se vai ver nada...

Nesta competição (Ravelry e Yahoo Groups), tenho 2 meses para fazer cada par de meias. Haverá prémios para as pessoas mais rápidas. Do que conheço de mim, não vou ser das mais rápidas, mas mesmo assim acho que vale a pena, a ver se ganho à-vontade e fico com algum par de meias feitas à mão para mim (sim que as outras acabei por dá-las à minha mãe!).

Acho que também vou precisar de mais DPNs...

When I was at the University, I knew a student who practised pentathlon. I have never been very athletic, but now that the dissertation is almost finished, I decided to enter a sock knitting competition! I have enough stash to knit 12 to 13 pairs of socks: a pastel-striped pair with silk, ua dark-striped one with shimmer, two fall-coloured striped ones and a striped one in blue and green, a cottony one in beige and gray stripes, two variegated in autumn/fall shades (and the blue Jaycrawlers in progress!), a red variegated, one haindpainted in pink and dark blue and two thicker ones in green and red stripes. It seems I am deeply lacking solid and semi-solid coloured yarn to show patterns better!

In this competition (Ravelry and Yahoo Groups), I have 2 months to make each pair of socks. The quickest knitters will receive prizes. I am sure I will NOT receive any of the fast-knitters prizes, but I hope I will end up with some handknitted socks for me (I ended up gifting the red finished pair to my mother).

Sem tempo para escrever, ficam fotos das mantas de crochet em andamento. / Not much time to write, I leave you with pictures of my crochet blankets in progress.

1) Manta de riscas feita com linhas que não sabia bem como usar, mas não propriamente restinhos. Estou a tricotá-la em dc, neste modelo da BellaDia. Uso agulha de 4.5 mm e escolhi linhas sobretudo verdes, e uma ou outra para contraste. As linhas arroxeadas são mais malva quando à luz solar, mas com luz eléctrica ficam roxas.../The non-leftovers vintage stripe blanket. I am knitting it all in dc (double crochet, American terminology) using the BellaDia pattern. I am using a 4.5 mm hook and several yarns from my stash with mostly greenish hues with some other colours for contrast. The purple stripes are mauve in natural sunlight and purple in electric light (I have no idea why!) and in photos they always look purple...

2) A manta dos restinhos de que falei aqui e aqui, agora parada enquanto acumulo mais restinhos.../The leftovers blanket mentioned here and here, now waiting for more leftovers!

I have not given up the blog, nor have I given up my crafts. At the moment, I am just too busy with reviewing the dissertation (It's almost done!) and my new job. Before I forget, I want to thank everyone who commented, and to say I'm sorry to whoever I forgot to answer or email or something. Thanks for your patience. In Portuguese I wrote a bit more, about some links with nice ideas. Even if you don't understand Portuguese, you may click on the links to see some visual candy or inspiration. Ask the readers: Where can I find simple, easy sewing projects for someone without much patience, without a decent sewing machine (I only have a cheap one that only sews straight, not even zigzag!) but who is getting annoyed that the fabric from clothes too old to give away is going to waste when it could become useful again? Pois. eu ainda cá ando e não desisti dos blogues. Mas as revisões da tese e o trabalho andam a consumir o meu tempo. Antes que me esqueça, quero agradecer a todos os que comentaram, pedir desculpa a quem me tenha perguntado algo que eu me tenha esquecido de responder, e dizer que espero vir a escrever mais dentro de algum tempo.

Para já tenho trabalhado numa das mantas (que apesar de não estar pronta, já está sobre a minha cama e dá conforto e cor ao quarto). Depois haverá fotos. Ficam por agora uns links de coisas que me inspiram para o futuro:

Um dia ainda me meto à costura só por isso! Faço aqui publicidade a um site com uma boa ideia: Good yarn karma. É um blogue onde podemos pôr para dar (for karma) ou para trocar (for trade) linhas, fibras, agulhas e livros.

Pelas minhas contas, quanto à manta Lizard Ridge tenho linha que chegue para fazer uma manta quadrada com cerca de 1,40-1,50 m de lado, ou uma manta rectangular com pouco mais de um metro por 1,80 m. Queria evitar comprar mais linhas (quero diminuir a stash, para já!). Que tamanho parece melhor para uma manta: 1,40*1,40 m ou 1,00*1,80 m? Agradeço desde já as respostas(nos comentários).

On Lizard Ridge, I seem to have enough yarn to make either a square blanket with 1,40-1,50 meters side, or a rectangular with a bit more than 1,00 by 1,80 meters. Hoje consegui convencer a máquina a tirar 4 fotos antes de desistir outra vez. Podiam ser melhores (as cores não estão bem realistas!), mas não me queixo, sempre se vê alguma coisa! / Today I finally convinced my camera to take 4 pictures, and then the camera quit again. The photos could be better (colours are a bit off) but I am not really complaining, at least I have some photos!

A manta às riscas (talvez se consiga ver que nas linhas de cor costumo mudar de fio umas 3 a 5 vezes, sempre é uma manta de restos). Tem cerca de 2 metros de largura por uns 40 cm, mas irá crescendo aos poucos. Já a uso na cama (de casal das pequenas, para terem noção do tamanho), a aquecer-me os pés. / The stripy blanket (maybe you can see that in the coloured stripes I usually have to change yarn 3 to 5 times, as it is a leftover yarn blanket). It is around 2 meters wide by 40 cm, but it will grow, slowly. I am already using it to warm my feet in bed (the bed is a smallish 2-person bed, to give you an idea of the size).

Vistas de pormenor. As cores estão azuladas da luz da manhã, na verdade há mais verde, amarelo, vermelho, laranja e bege e são mais intensos./ Detail. Colours are bluer because of the morning light, in real life there is more green, red, orange and beige and they are more intense.

Já faço crochet há muito tempo, aliás aprendi ao mesmo tempo que aprendi a fazer malha, mas nunca deixei de fazer crochet ao longo de todos estes anos. Crochet com fios fininhos de algodão, para fazer toalhas e coisas assim. Crochet em lã, com agulhas grossas, é a primeira vez que faço desde que aprendi, na infância, fazendo duas pegas em lã. E mesmo nessa altura usei agulha 4 mm, é a primeira vez que faço crochet (a manta das riscas pretas misturadas com todas as cores) em agulha de 7 mm. E está-me a dar gozo. É um gozo completamente diferente da malha, até porque posso fazer malha durante horas e horas, ao passo que o crochet ao fim de algum tempo me faz dores nos pulsos. Mas, como sou bem rápida a fazer crochet, até me rende.

I am a crocheter since my childhood. I learned at the same time I learned to knit, but I never stopped crocheting through all these years. Thin cotton crochet, table covers and delicate things like that. Crochet using wool and thick hooks, it's the first time I do that since I learned (I made two woolen potholders, then, using 4 mm hooks). And it's the first time I crochet using 7 mm hooks (the black/ random colours stripy blanket), and I'm loving it. It's a different pleasure than the one I derive from knitting. I can knit hours in a row, while crochet makes my wrists hurt after an hour or so. But as I am a quick crocheter, my crochet, one hour at a time, still goes fast.

A manta está a ficar gira, densa e pesada, o que é bom para uma manta e típico do crochet. Como é uma manta de restos, estou a deixar as pontas por rematar de ambos os lados, fazendo uma espécie de franja (que depois vou cortar de modo a ter um comprimento uniforme), e estou a unir os restinhos de linha com nós, que tenho o cuidado de pôr todos do mesmo lado. A manta é rústica, feita com tudo quanto é linha, não é uma manta feita com todos os cuidados. É um projecto para fazer em frente da TV, sem prestar demasiada atenção. O crochet gasta a linha bem depressa e já estou a ficar sem restos de linhas, e os poucos que restam têm cores demasiado parecidas entre si.

The blanket is starting to look nice, thick and heavy, which is good for a blanket and typical of crochet. As it is a leftover yarns blanket, I am leaving the tails on each side without weaving them in, as a fringe (that in the end I will comb and cut in an uniform length), and I am knotting the different yarn scraps together, and getting the knots all in the same side of the blanket. It's a rustic, leftovers blanket, using whatever yarn leftovers I have, not a carefully made blanket, a project to crochet when watching TV and I want it to be simple and relaxing. Crochet uses up a lot of yarn, and I almost do not have any leftover yarns left, and the few that remain have non-contrasting colours.

Perguntas aos leitores: 1) Estou na dúvida: será que devo passar pela loja de linhas mais próxima e ver se nas linhas em promoção têm alguma das cores de que sinto a falta no saco das linhas em saldo? 2) Esta é a pergunta importante: o que estou a fazer de errado para ter dores nos pulsos quando faço crochet uma hora seguida? Como corrigir?

Houve, como já contei, uma fase recentemente em que ganhei concursos e encontrei pessoas generosas a dar linhas e outras coisas de malhas. Por agora prometi abster-me durante uns meses (até à Páscoa, ou talvez um pouco mais), mas com a demora dos envios postais continuo a receber os presentes. Fiz, lavei com champô e amaciador para ficarem mais macios, e bloqueei (eu que raramente bloqueio malhas!) dois gorrinhos brancos em lã para a AARN (ver post abaixo). Foram feitos com modelo inventado, e estão giros! Se conseguir convencer a máquina a tirar ao menos uma foto.../ I knit, washed with shampoo and conditioner to get them softer, and blocked (I rarely block knits!) two white little knit hats for the AARN newborns (see previous post). The pattern of each hat was invented on the spur of the moment, and they look cute! If I could convince my camera to take at least one picture of them...

O facto de não ter fotos, ou de não escrever sobre eles, não significa que não tenha começado mais projectos nos últimos meses. Fica a lista dos trabalhos nas agulhas neste momento, e comentários sobre eles:

The fact that I do not have photos of them, or have not written about them, does not mean that I have not started more projects in the last few months. Here's a list of all my projects currently on the needles, and some comments about them:

1) Lizard Ridge. Com estas linhas: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. Estou a adorar, mas vai demorar um bocadinho. Sobretudo porque recentemente entrei numa onda de tricotar também para quem precisa, e tenho nas agulhas: / Lizard Ridge. With these yarns: 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8. I am loving it, but it will take a while, mostly because I am now in a phase of knitting also for those who need, and I have on the needles:

2) Um gorro para recém-nascido/prematuro para este projecto (enxovais para bebés da AARN). Numa lã branca antiga que tinha algures na stash. O meu primeiro gorro em cinco agulhas! A princípio não me ajeitava, mas agora já me despacho, e está a ficar giro! A ver se ainda tenho tempo de fazer mais alguma roupinha de bebé a tempo da próxima entrega (antes de 30 de Março)!/ A newborn/preemie hat for this project (baby clothes and other baby things for AARN, which helps poor families who recently had a new baby). In a white yarn I had somewhere in my stash. My first hat in DPNs! At first I was clumsy, but now I can knit in a nice speed, and it looks cute! I hope I'll find the time to knit some more clothes for babies in time for the next package (before March 30th)!

3) E também para dar, vou fazendo quadrados para este projecto (vale a pena clicar, as 3 mantas que já completaram são lindas lindas, e vão para miúdos lutadores que merecem um abraço extra). Por enquanto só completei um, nesta linha, de que gostei tanto que fiz, com o resto da linha, um pano de rosto macio para mim! As próximas linhas a usar em quadrados, ou nas roupinhas de bebé para a AARN, são estas, e depois talvez estas ou estas. O projecto "Warming Grace" é gerido por esta tricotadeira, que admiro muito (vejam a camisola maravilhosa que ela fez para o marido em Novembro de 2006), e que esteve a dar um monte de linhas recentemente (eu também vou receber... o correio demora a atravessar o Atlântico, mas ainda bem, que assim posso fazer mais quadrados enquanto espero!) / Also for a worthy cause, I am kniting squares for this project (go ahead and click, the 3 blankets already completed are very beautiful, and will warm and hug kids who are in a big fight). I have just completed one, using this yarn, and with the rest of the yarn (which I loved) I knit a soft facecloth for me! The next yarns to be used either in squares or in baby clothes for AARN are these, and then maybe these or these. The "Warming Grace" project is an idea of this knitter, who I admire a lot (see the wonderful sweater she knitted to her husband las November), and who recently gave away a lot of yarn (I will receive some... the mail takes a while to cross the Atlantic, which is good, as I can knit more squares qhile I wait!)

4) Uma manta de crochet com base nesta receita, mas modificada, claro... Estou a fazer uma carreira em meio ponto triplo em lã preta que tinha na stash (esta, e sobras destas perneiras) ou que comprei de propósito (não tenho a certeza dos nomes dos pontos em português...), seguida de seis carreiras em meio ponto duplo (mais alto que ponto baixo, mas mais baixo que ponto duplo) em cores diversas, usando restinhos de linha que sobrarem dos outros projectos, e também as linhas dos peixinhos (desisti da manta dos peixinhos e desfi-los todos. Não tenho paciência para costurar tanta coisa!), e depois volta a ter uma carreira de preto e seis de cores diversas. Está a ficar grossa, pesada e gira. O contraste entre as riscas de preto a intervalos constantes (uma certa estrutura) e as riscas de cores aleatórias de composição diversa (um certo acaso) é engraçado. Projecto agora parado à espera de mais restinhos de linhas (em breve!) / A crochet blanket based in this pattern, which I tweaked a bit... I crochet one stripe in half triple crochet in black wool that I had in my stash (this one, and leftover yarn from these legwarmers) or that I bought for this end followed by six stripes in half double crochet in random colours, using leftover yarn from other projects, and also the yarn previously used in the fish blanket (I gave up and frogged all the fish. I don't want to sew so many little fishes!), and then again another black stripe and six more in random colours and so on. It's starting to look nice, thick and heavy. The contrast between the black stripes in regular distance (structure) and the random colour stripes (lack of structure) is fun. This project is now stopped waiting for more yarn leftovers (soon!)

5) Um xaile muito simples mas original em ponto de liga, usando esta linha (a Velvet Grapes, e se precisar no fim acrescento uma barra de rosa). Digo que é original porque não é triangular, é da forma que se vê abaixo (a foto não é do meu, obviamente está bem mais atrasado), que me parece bem mais prática e me agrada mais. Dá imenso gozo a tricotar, mas infelizmente está parado porque o comecei em agulhas rectas de 6 cm e os pontos já quase não cabem nelas, preciso de comprar uma circular de 6 cm para continuar. Gosto muito da linha (uma das minhas preferidas!) e do modelo, que pode ser usado assim simples ou ser facilmente adaptado para ter uma barra bordada ou mesmo bordados no xaile todo! / A very simple but original shawl in garter stitch, using this yarn (Velvet Grapes, and if it's not enough in the end I'll add a stripe of pink). I find it unusual because it is not triangular, it has the shape you can see below (the photo is not mine, mine is far from finished and has a different colour), that I think is more practical and I prefer. I love knitting it, but unfortunately had to stop because I started it in straight 6 mm needles and now the stiches are so many that I really need to switch to a 6mm circular, but I have not bought it yet. I love this yarn (it is one of my favourite yarns!) and also the pattern, that can be used simple like this or be easily adapted to include a lacy edging or some lace in the main shawl!

Há ainda estes, que estão parados há pelo menos uns meses: / I must not forget these ones, which I have not touched in at least a few months:

6) As Jaywalkers. Fazem-me dores nos pulsos, e não ando com paciência para meias. / Jaywalkers. They make my wrists hurt, and I'm not in a mood for socks now.

7) Umas meias simples usando restinhos de linhas em agulha 3 mm. Bem mais fáceis e rápidas, mas, como disse, não ando com paciência para meias. / A pair of simple socks using leftover yarns in 3 mm DPNs. Much easier and quicker, but I'm really not in a mood for socks now.

8) O infame casaco em trapilho, que cada vez mais me convenço que hei-de desfazer para fazer outra coisa... Eu até gosto da linha! Afinal ninguém me mandou um cartão virtual de S. Valentim (chuif... chuif... ;-) ), mas não importa porque tive um monte de comentários da Mamã Martinho no meu outro blogue. Especialmente para ti, aqui ficam comentários aos teus comentários:

1) Ainda não fiz o top laranja. Ando numa de mantas, agora, e na verdade não tenho assim tanto tempo para tricotar quanto isso. Se calhar quando mexer nessa linha mudo de ideias quanto ao projecto, logo se vê...

2) A linha castanha veio inesperadamente, porque eu precisava da linha preta para a manta de crochet e a Emily estava a dá-la apenas pelo preço do envio. Ora como o envio é por patamares de peso, ela perguntou-me generosamente se não queria que ela acrescentasse mais alguma linha, que ficava pelo mesmo preço, e eu aceitei a oferta. (Acrescento: Para espanto meu, ao abrir finalmente a encomenda descobri que ela ainda juntou mais duas meadinhas de linha para meias pintada por ela, que ainda não acrescentei no outro blogue!). A tua sugestão é boa, se eu tiver coragem de tentar a feltragem, mas ainda não sei. Para já fica assim, até porque posso sempre precisar de fazer um cachecol masculino para oferecer e fica reservada...

3) O trapilho e respectivo casaco... Ainda não sei que lhe faça. Olho para a linha e gosto dela, mas desapaixonei-me do casaco em andamento e nunca mais me convenço a recomeçar. Está guardado à espera que volte a apaixonar-me... Ou que tenha outra ideia para ele. Logo se vê.

4) As fibras para fiar em geral: Não ando numa onda de fiar, de maneira que as embrulhei muito bem apertadinhas para ocuparem menos espaço e guardei-as todas. Quando as tiver fiado logo penso no que hei-de fazer com elas... Não preciso de usar cada uma em separado, pode ser que faça projectos combinando várias, não sei. A única que sei como quero usar é esta mas não tenho agulha do tamanho necessário (uma circular de tamanho 7 ou 8 mm) e é por isso que ainda não fiz o gorro. Quanto à alpaca preta: não, não tenho de fiar o camelo :-), mas sim a fibra penteada e macia, que, como é preta, não se consegue fotografar como deve ser. Mas a alpaca é muito quente, bem mais quente que a própria lã... Acho que quando a fiar decido o que faço, mas não é para já...

5) Esta viscose é para camisolas frescas ou casacos para noites de Verão. Saias de malha acho que não tenho coragem de tentar... Acho que comprei muita linha desta, mas como estava muito muito barata...

6) As duas linhas verdes novas: apesar de não terem bem a mesma tensão, uma hipótese é combiná-las de alguma forma numa só peça, mas ainda não tenho nenhuma ideia...

7) Esta mohair, até tenho umas ideias giras, mas não quero mexer nela antes de ganhar um pouco mais de experiência...

8) A seda: um top, claro.

9) A caxemira está também à espera de eu ganhar um pouco mais de experiência. Mas como me enviaram dois novelinhos pequenos de amostra para eu ver como a linha fica macia depois de lavada (não tenho foto), talvez experimente uma coisa pequena antes, só para ter um pequeno luxo para mim...

10) A Noro Silk Garden, tenho-a pensada para fazer uma echarpe como estas, mas mais pequena, que não tenho novelos para uma tão grande!

11) Esta é para um cachecol, quase de certeza, ou um daqueles género laço, ou então um rendado e fininho. Ainda não sei.

12) Esta já está a uso no Lizard Ridge (um novelo já está gasto, aliás), ainda bem que me lembras que tenho de acrescentar a informação lá...

13) Ainda não sei, quanto a esta... Fica à espera e não me incomoda...

14) Quanto à pergunta que fizeste, se ainda tenho estas linhas todas: tenho 27 meadas ou novelos em projectos. Em particular a Lizard Ridge usará uns 15 novelos, e tenho um xaile simples começado que tive de parar por falta de agulhas circulares do tamanho certo.

A verdade é que não tenho pouca linha, mas, felizmente, não me saiu assim tão caro o aumento de stash (felizmente, porque estou curta de finanças), porque andei à procura de promoções e tricotadeiras com linhas para trocar. Para já, convém-me tricotar em trabalhos com linhas grossas, porque tenho vontade e porque me libertam espaço nas caixas de linhas! O tempo é que não chega para tudo... Chegando o calor, logo pegarei em linhas mais finas...

Acrescento: Pois é, mais umas linhas novas (ver blogue da minha stash)... É que, por um lado, tenho tido imensa sorte em concursos (de linhas, que no Euromilhões nunca ganho nada...), e por outro calhei de encontrar duas tricotadeiras a darem linhas fantásticas (estas que acrescentei hoje (dia 20), e mais outras que ainda devem demorar um bocadinho a chegar cá)! Depois desta sorte toda, acho que devo ficar uns tempos sem participar em concursos (para dar hipótese aos outros ;-) ) e que devo "dar de volta" alguma coisa a quem precisa: ando à procura de projectos de caridade que precisem de quadrados para mantas ou outras coisas simples (que eu ando com vontade de tricotar coisas que não exijam muito esforço mental... lá virá o tempo das coisas mais complicadas!).

So nobody sent me a Valentine (snif... snif... ;-) ), but it's OK because Mamã Martinho wrote a lot of comments in my other blog. So, dedicated to her, I comment on her comments:

1) I have not knit the orange top yet (she had asked me if I did). I am on a blanket kick, now, and the time to knit is not that much, really. Maybe when I get to knit with that yarn I will change my mind about the project, we will see then...

2) The brown yarn came unexpectedly, because I needed the black yarn for my crochet blanket (yes, I am crochetting a stripy blanket: I will post about it some day), and Emily was giving it away just for shipping price. As the shipping goes by steps, she generouly asked me if I would like her to add some more yarn, that I would receive for the same price, and I accepted. (In fact, she ended up adding two skeins of sock yarn handpainted by her, which were a wonderful surprise, but I did not add them yet). Your suggestion is good (Mamã Martinho had suggested in the comments that I knitted a felted tote or bag with this yarn), if I ever get the guts to try felting, but I'm not sure yet. I will keep this yarn aside for a while, as I might need to knit a gift for a male friend and this yarn looks perfect for a masculine scarf...

3) Trapilho and the UFO cardigan... I don't know what to do with it. I look at the yarn and like it, but I fell out of love of the cardigan in progress and I cannot get myself to restart it. It's waiting that I fall in love with it again, or that I have another idea for the yarn. We'll see.

4) Spinning fiber in general: I am not in a spinning kick, so I wrapped them all very tightly (don't worry, I can always fluff them later!) to save space and put them all inside a transparent box (they say sunlight chases m*o*t*h*s away). When I get to spin them I'll think what to knit with them... I don't need to use each yarn separately, I may knit projects that combine several yarns, but I don't need to know yet. I only know how I wish to use this one, but I do not have circular needles of the size I need (7 or 8 mm) so I have not knitted the hat yet. About the black alpaca: no, I do not have to spin the camel (alpaca is a camelid :-) ), but the soft, lovely fiber, which cannot be decently photographed, as it is black. Alpaca is very warm, warmer than wool... I will decide what to do with it when I get to spin it, but I'm not in a hurry...

5) This viscose is planned for light summer sweaters or cardigans. I don't think I will try a knitted skirt (Mamã Martinho suggested a skirt, but she is bolder than me!)... I guess I bought too much of this yarn, but it was really cheap...

6) The two new green yarns: their gauges are not exactly the same, but maybe I can combine them in something, I don't know yet...

7) This mohair: I have some nice ideas to use it, but do not wish to try until I get a bit more experience...

8) The silk: a top, of course.

9) The cashmere yarn is also waiting that I will get more experience. But as they sent me two mini-skeins so that I could see how soft the yarn is after being washed (no picture), maybe I'll try something small sooner, to give myself a little luxury...

10) Noro Silk Garden is set aside for a stole like these, but smaller, I do not have enough yarn for a big one!

11) This one is for a scarf, maybe one of those small neck "bows", or a lacy, thin scarf.

12) These ones are being used in Lizard Ridge (one of the balls is already knitted, yay!).

13) This one, I have no idea yet, and it does not disturb me.

I have quite a bit of yarn, but fortunately it wasn't that expensive to enrich my stash (fortunately, because I am quite broke), because I searched for sales, discounts, and stash swaps. Now I need to knit with thicker yarns to free some space on my yarn boxes! Time is never enough... Coming summer, I'll knit with thinner yarns...

Added: So I've got more new yarns (see my stash blog)... On one hand, lately I have been really lucky in contests (yarn contests, I never get to win anything in Euromillions...), and on the other hand I found two knitters giving away wonderful yarns (the ones I added today (the 20th), and some more that should take some more time to arrive here)! After being so lucky, I guess I should spend some time without participating in yarn contests (so that others can win too ;-) ) and I must "give back" something to the ones who need most: I am now looking for charity projects that need knitted squares for blankets or other simple knitted things (simple, because now I just want to knit relaxing, simple, things... some day I'll knit complex things, just not now!).

Brincadeirinhas / Playthings

Como podem ver, pus um gatinho na sidebar, enquanto não posso ter um em minha casa. É interactivo, podem brincar com ele. Estou habituada a viver em companhia de felinos e fazem-me falta. Como se diz em inglês, sou uma cat person, embora goste de cães e mesmo de hamsters.

As you can see, I added a little cat to the sidebar, while I cannot have one at home. It's an interactive virtual cat, you can play with it. I am used to live with feline company and I miss them. As they say in English, I am a cat person, though I like dogs and even hamsters.

Por outro lado, para o dia de S. Valentim (que, em boa verdade, nunca fez muito o meu género: só uma vez dei um postal a um namoradinho, em tempos da escola, há uns 14 ou 15 anos), fica aqui uma brincadeirinha virtual. Postais de namorados não haverá, mas pode haver de amigo(a)s :-)

About St. Valentine's day (which, to tell the truth, I never really cared about: in my life I have written one Valentine's postcard to my then-boyfriend, which attended the same school I did, 14 or 15 years ago), here's a little virtual plaything. Maybe some friend will send me a Valentine card!

A minha máquina fotográfica desistiu de funcionar, por isso por enquanto fica tudo feio e sem fotos. A não ser quando eu encontro alguma foto online para pôr, mas não é o mesmo. Por isso, por agora tem de ficar assim. Talvez no futuro eu arranje um "paitrocínio" para me re-equipar...

My digital camera finally gave up working, so now all my posts will be ugly and pictureless. Unless when I find a picture online, but it's not the same. Maybe in the future one of my parents (or both) will sponsor new equipment...

Por ocasião do meu aniversário em Dezembro, a Filomena enviou-me um delicioso conjunto de presentes relacionados com a malha: dois novelos de Cervinia Calzetteria na cor 902 e mais dois novelos de Cervinia Calzetteria na cor 903 (ou seja, futuros dois pares de meias lindos para quando me acabar a preguiça de tricotar com agulhas mais finas...), mais um par de agulhas 6 mm em madeira feitas por ela (deliciosamente acetinadas e macias, mas sem barbela, quando tiver coragem experimento!) e um mini-postalzinho muito simpático.

In December, around my birthday, Filomena sent me a wonderful set of knitting-related presents: two balls of Cervinia Calzetteria in colour 902 plus two balls of Cervinia Calzetteria in colour 903 (which means two beautiful future pairs of socks when my lazyness finally ends and I restart knitting at finer gauges...), a pair of handmade (by her!) wooden needles (deliciously satined and soft and without hook, so I need to gather up courage to try them!) and a nice mini-postcard.

Meias / Socks

(para concorrer a este concurso, mas também porque já tinha pensado nisto/ post to participate in this contest but also because I had thought of it some days ago)

Tem estado frio (para o nosso clima!) e eu com o frio tenho os pés e as mãos frias. Só que, ultimamente, ando preguiçosa e a querer trabalhar em fios grossos, que andam depressa (daí as mantas, a Lizard Ridge e agora uma em crochet, assim que eu arranje agulhas...). E meias e luvas, nada. Fui comprar meias até aos joelhos de lã (mas de fábrica!), em desespero de causa (e de frio), que se esperar até fazer algum par de meias, bem fico descalça até ao ano que vem....

It has been cold (for our climate) and I get cold hands and cold feet. But lately, I am feeling lazy and want to work in thick yarns that knit fast (hence the blankets, Lizard Ridge and now a crocheted one, as soon as I find a hook...) So, no gloves, and no socks. Feeling cold, I bought more factory-made wool knee socks, because if I would wait for me to knit a pair, my feet would freeze.

Mas a verdade é que já tricotei um par de meias, e tenho mais dois em andamento (as infames Jaywalkers, e um par com várias linhas à mistura). O par de meias que tricotei até ao fim deu-me gozo, bem mais que as Jaywalkers (que, em agulha 2 mm, nunca mais acabam), mas ficou-me um pouco largo e acabei por dá-lo à minha mãe. O par em várias linhas está-me à medida, e vai quase a meio, mas agora estou com preguiça, que se há-de fazer! Abaixo fica a foto do único par completo que fiz:

The truth is I have already knitted a pair of socks, and I have two other pairs in the needles (the infamous Jaywalkers, and another pair with several yarns). The pair I finished was fun to knit, a lot more than the Jaywalkers (the neverending Jaywalkers in 2 mm needles),but it was a bit large and I ended up giving it to my mother. Pois é, eu sei fazer crochet, mas costumo trabalhar com agulhas fininhas (o último grande projecto é uma toalha de mesa em quadrados de linho). Segue-se que estou a pensar fazer uma manta em crochet para aproveitar restinhos de linha com as sobras do Lizard Ridge (que é impossível fotografar, dado que a máquina desistiu de vez...) e outras linhas, e tenho uma pergunta:

Se para tricotar uma linha eu uso agulha 6 mm, para fazer crochet com a mesma linha, devo usar agulha 6 mm também, ou uma mais grossa para o tecido resultante não ficar demasiado duro?

Agradeço desde já a quem me souber responder (nos comentários).

ACRESCENTO POSTERIOR: Parece que é mesmo isso, preciso de uma agulha mais grossa para fazer crochet: ver aqui. A ver se as consigo encontrar, que não está fácil e não me parece que seja muito prático usar uma agulha de tricot com barbela em vez de uma agulha de crochet!

So, I can crochet, but I usually work in thin thread and needles (my last WIP is a table cover in linen squares). I am thinking of crocheting a blanket to use up yarn leftovers from Lizard Ridge (which, by the way, I cannot photograph, as my camera gave up working...) and other yarns, and I have a question:

If to knit with a certain yarn I use 6 mm needles, to crochet with the same yarn, should I use a 6 mm hook, or a thicker one to get a more drapeable fabric?

Thanks in advance for any advice (in the comments' section).

EDITED TO ADD: It seems I was right, I need a thicker crochet hook than the knitting needles: see here. Let's see if I can find them in my city, because I only found up to 5 mm, and I don't think it would be very fun to use one of my knitting needles with hook to crochet!

Este tema é um tema sensível, e estive quase quase a não blogar sobre ele. Afinal, os leitores mais assíduos sabem que sou católica, e provavelmente supõem que isso me leva a preferir uma lei que, a uma mulher em dúvida, torne mais difícil a opção pelo aborto, uma lei que talvez nalguns casos faça a mulher ou aqueles que a querem aconselhar nesse sentido recuar. Supõem bem. Mas ia manter o meu não em silêncio, reservado aos que me são íntimos e com quem já discuti o tema muitas, muitas vezes. Íntimos que concordam e íntimos que discordam, mas íntimos com quem posso explorar o tema com o respeito e profundidade necessários, que me parecem difíceis de conseguir aqui.

Daí o silêncio, que apenas quebro agora. Para vos remeter a este testemunho que se me deparou no deambular por blogues de tricotadeiras.

A máquina não quer cooperar, mas com fita-cola e muita paciência lá tira umas 4 ou 5 fotos antes de voltar a apagá-las. Em Outubro participei num concurso no blogue "The Naked Sheep", onde me perguntavam o lugar mais estranho onde já tricotei. Eu já tricotei em diversos lugares (leiam o meu comentário) e ganhei uns presentes por ter tricotado num retiro espiritual (é verdade!). Tinham-nos dito para lermos umas passagens das Escrituras e meditarmos nelas. Eu li, escrevi um pouco, fui andar a pé pelos campos à volta do centro de retiros, meditei, e, naturalmente, peguei num trabalho muito simples que tinha entre mãos (e que levei para o retiro... ops!) e comecei a tricotar.../In October I participated in a contest on "The Naked Sheep", where we were asked the strangest place where we had knitted. I have knitted in several places (read my comment) and I won some presents because I have knitted in a spiritual retreat (it's true!). They told us to read some text of the Bible, and to meditate on it. I read, wrote a little bit, went walking through the fields around the retreat center, meditated, and, in the most natural way, reached for a easy knitting project I had taken with me to the retreat (ops!...) and started knitting...

Podem ver pormenores aqui. É 100% acrílico, mas é um bom acrílico, está dobado em cones e as cores são bonitas. A linha é boa, o toque é bom e não desfia, eu é que ando sem tempo e sem espaço e quero ver-me livre de alguma stash... E é MONTES de linha (500 g / 2500 m cada cone).

You can see details here. It is 100% acrylic, but it is nice acrylic, already wound in cones and the colours are nice. The line is good, the touch is nice and it does not split, but I don't have enough space and enough time for my stash... And each cone has LOTS of yarn! (500 g / 2500 m each cone).

Pelas minhas contas, para ter uma manta grandinha (aí 1.20*1.50 m) preciso de mais alguma linha. Então pergunto: acham que acrescente alguma destas duas linhas (ou ambas) A1, A2? A primeira é 100% lã como as outras, mas mais fina e tem uma textura diferente. A segunda, bem, não sei de que é feita sequer...

According to my calculations, to have a decent-sized blanket (around 1.20*1.50 m) I need to use a bit more yarn. So I ask the readers: do you think I should add any (or both) of this yarns A1, A2? The first one is 100% wool like the others, but thinner and with a different texture. The second, I have no idea of its composition...

Já dei esta linha. Mas entretanto, tenho novas linhas que muito me alegram e me distraem da alergia que, felizmente, quase desapareceu entretanto.

I gave away this yarn. Meanwhile, I bought new yarns which give me great joy and make me forget the allergy that, fortunately, is now almost gone.

Esta é a linha misteriosa. A antiga dona não sabe nem a marca nem a composição, mas eu apaixonei-me pelas cores. Testámos (ambas) com o teste do fogo, e ainda não tirei conclusões. Ou seja, o fio arde como lã (queimei várias pontinhas de fios de composição conhecida para comparar), mas não feltra e tem um toque mais frio que a lã. Vou experimentar com mais linhas, a ver se descubro. Ainda não decidi se a hei-de usar também no Lizard Ridge ou não./This is the mistery yarn. Her previous owner does not know the brand nor the composition, but I fell in love with the colours. We both did the burn test, and no conclusions yet. It burns like wool (I tested several yarns of known composition, by burning little pieces of them, to compare), but it does not felt and has a cooler touch than wool. I will test with more yarns, to see if I find out. I have not decided if I will use it in Lizard Ridge or not.

Como sabem, comecei o Lizard Ridge usando uma série de linhas 100% lã. Estou a sortear a ordem e o número de riscas de cada cor. Bem, logo nas primeiras 5 tenho 2 riscas de Reynolds Lopi cinza claro, que já tricotei. Problema: esta lã larga pêlo, e causa-me alergia! Ainda pensei que seria tolerável, mas hoje pica-me o rosto e o tronco todo, e tenho a pele do rosto seca e a descamar, por isso só tenho uma hipótese: desfazer o que fiz e recomeçar a manta sem usar esta linha. A minha sorte é que é apenas um novelo, por isso não é demasiado grave.

As you know, I started Lizard Ridge using several 100% wool yarns. I am randomluy choosing the order and the number of stripes in each colour. Well, in the first 5 stripes there are 2 using Reynolds Lopi in light grey. Problem: this yarn sheds, and I am allergic to it! I thought maybe it would be tolerable, but today my face and body itches and my face's skin is dry and scaly, so there's only one solution: to frog what I have knitted and restart the blanket without using this yarn. I'm lucky it is only one ball, so it's not a big deal.

Como não posso tricotar com esta lã nem usá-la seja para o que for, ofereço-a à primeira pessoa (europeia, por favor, para que o correio não seja demasiado caro para mim) que escreva nos comentários que a quer usar. No novelo, por usar, estão cerca de 80 gramas, e se a pessoa quiser posso dar-lhe também a linha já usada (cerca de 20 gramas).

As I cannot knit with this yarn nor use it in anything, I give it away to the first person (in Europe, please, so that the postal cost will not be too high for me) who writes in the comments that she/he wishes to use it. In the ball, unused, there are still around 80 grams, and if the person wishes, I can send also the frogged yarn (around 20 grams).

Random Lizard Ridge

As opiniões são unânimes: vou fazer o Lizard Ridge. Resta decidir os pormenores. Para já, decidi: 1) fazer riscas em cores alternadas, em tiras, com liga entre as cores; 2) sortear a sequência de cores e o número de riscas de cada cor usando o gerador de números aleatórios da minha velha máquina de calcular de 1990 e pouco; 3) usar todas as cores que tenho, e à medida que for recebendo mais linhas que queira juntar, vou acrescentando.

The opinions are unanimous: I will knit Lizard Ridge. Now the details. I have decided: 1) to knit full stripes in alternate colours with garter ridges between colours; 2) to define the colour sequence and the number of repeats in each colour using the random number generator in my old calculator from the early 1990s; 3) to use all the colours I've got, and when I receive another colour I want to use in the blanket, then add it.

Ou seja, resolvi o problema de não saber como combinar as cores e ficar indecisa atribuindo a decisão ao acaso! (como na mini-manta abaixo, em que a largura de cada risca foi decidida pelo mesmo gerador de números aleatórios). Claro que tenho medo de que fique feio, mas quando juntei os novelos todos vi que, embora estranho, o conjunto de cores não é feio. Eu gostava que tivesse mais vermelho e mais roxo, mas ver-se-á se funciona... Seguirei o que a máquina me ditar, com uma única excepção: se saírem riscas alternadas da mesma cor, sorteio outra vez até que dê cor diferente!

This means I solved the problem of deciding how to combine the colours by making a random number generator decide! (the same generator I used to decide each stripe width in the mini-blanket below). Of course I'm afraid it will be ugly, but when I got all my yarns together I saw that, though weird, the colours don't make an ugly combination. I would like it to have more red and violet, but we will see if it works... I will follow what the calculator dictates, with one single exception: if I get alternate stripes of the same colour, I'll draw another number to replace it until the colours are different!

De resto, já comecei (vou na segunda repetição e não tenho fotos ainda) e o modelo é mais fácil de tricotar do que eu pensava :) Agora descobri uma maneira mais fácil de fazer os wrap & turn e vai ser cada vez melhor :) Vai ficar radicalmente diferente do modelo com Noro Kureyon, mas espero que fique bonito!

I have already started knitting (I'm on the second repeat and don't have photos) and the pattern is easier than I thought :) Now I found an easier way to do the wrap & turn and it's going to be great :) My blanket will be very different from the ones using Noro Kureyon, but I hope it will be pretty!

Mas para as que já responderam (obrigada!), e para todos os que quiserem dar uma opinião, outra pergunta: Se eu fizer o Lizard Ridge alternando cores, acham que devo incluir, juntamente com as linhas que já referi ontem, mais estas (desta cor tenho 600 g, logo esta apareceria com mais frequência)? Ou acham que ficam mal juntas e não devo misturar esta com as outras?

But, to the ones qho already have answered (thanks!) and to everyone who wants to give me an opinion, another question: If I decide to knit Lizard Ridge alternatng colours, do you think I should include, besides the yarns I mentioned yesterday, these ones (I have 600 g of this colour, so this one would appear more frequently)? Or do you think this yarn colour does not combine and I should not mix it with the others?

Estou indecisa e peço a opinião aos leitores, se é que me resta algum. Quero fazer uma manta com lãs variadas: esta, esta, esta, a laranja desta, esta, talvez esta, talvez esta, e ainda outras que comprei recentemente (ajudando ao destash duma colega tricotadeira). De cada uma delas só tenho 100 a 200 g, é mesmo para ficar multicor. Há vários padrões que me atraem. Qual dos seguintes vos parece melhor?

I am undecided and am asking my readers for their opinions, if I still have any readers... I want to knit a blanket with several yarns: this one, this one, this one, the orange one, this one, maybe this one, maybe this one and other yarns I bought recently (helping to destash a fellow knitter). I only have 100 g to 200 g of each, so it's supposed to be a multicoloured blanket. I like several patterns. Which of the following looks best to you?

1 - Quadrados de uma só cor em liga diagonal/ Unicoloured squares in diagonal garter. Vantagens: simples, permite-me distribuir as cores no fim. Inconvenientes: mais costura, se não quero desperdiçar linha vou ter de fazer quadrados multicores e não saberei como os combinar. Pros: easy, allows me to combine the colours in the end. Cons: more sewing, I'll have to knit multicolour squares as I want to use up all the yarn and I'll not know how to combine them.

2 - Lizard Ridge Adaptado para ir alternando duas cores, como aqui. Tricotado em tiras, como aqui. Posso não bloquear e deixar as saliências, como aqui. Vantagens: Lindo. Se feito em tiras, menos costuras. Posso ir alternando cores e não tenho a dúvida sobre o que fazer aos restos como na hipótese 1. Inconvenientes: Parece mais difícil. Terei de ir pensando que cores ir alternando, até porque ainda não tenho as linhas todas e não quero esperar por elas para começar.Alternating two yarns, like here. Knit in stripes, like here. I can decide not to block and let it have texture, like here. Pros: Beautiful. If knit in stripes, less sewing. I can alternate colours and I don't have to find a way to use the leftovers like in 1. Cons: Looks harder. I'll have to think what colours to alternate, as I don't have all yarns yet and I don't want to wait for them to start knitting.

3 - Lizard Ridge crochet Vantagens: como é crochet, posso fazer a largura toda em vez de tiras, sem ter de costurar. Inconvenientes: a textura do crochet é capaz de ser menos maleável e mais desagradável ao toque. Pros: As it is crochet, I can make across all width instead of stripes, and not have to sew anything. Cons: the texture of crochet may be less drapey and less nice to touch.

4 - Garterlac. Vantagens: Se feito em tiras, menos costuras. Posso ir alternando cores e não tenho a dúvida sobre o que fazer aos restos como na hipótese 1. Inconvenientes: Parece mais difícil. Terei de ir pensando que cores ir alternando, até porque ainda não tenho as linhas todas e não quero esperar por elas para começar. Seduz-me menos que o 2, mas parece mais fácil. Pros: If knit in stripes, less sewing. I can alternate colours and I don't have to find a way to use the leftovers like in 1. Cons: Looks harder. E nos intervalos faço malha que não me dê que pensar muito (estou a fazer um log cabin aleatório baseado nesta receita, usando as linhas que comprei em saldo). Mas como ando ocupada com a tese, ainda não há fotografias.

2) Obviamente, o aumento da stash que referi ontem levou à compra de mais uma caixa./The stash enhancement I referred yesterday lead to the purchase of another box.

3) Comprei um brinquedinho extra para quando tiver tempo. Já o experimentei uma vez com a pior linha que tenho em casa, e gostei do resultado! Com linha de que eu goste, deve ser excelente! / I bought an extra toy for me, which I will go using as soon as I have time. I have tried it once with the worse yarn I have at home, and I liked the result, so with a better yarn it must be wonderful!

4) Ganhei uma prenda! Tinha contribuído há um tempo largo para esta causa, e nunca mais pensei no assunto. Há uns dias, recebi um email DELA a dizer que uma generosa tricotadeira tinha oferecido uma série de coisas para dar a 34 dos muitos que contribuíram (e continuam a contribuir). Tenho andado ocupada, e cansada também. Pouca malha, pouco tempo para escrever. Nenhumas fotografias. Ainda assim, tenho coisas a dizer:

1) Entrei numa troca: o International Magazine Swap da Cotton Strudel. A mim calhou-me uma artista da tecelagem canadiana, a Jen, (vejam só os trabalhos que ela teceu!) que, generosamente, me enviou duas revistas (uma de malha, a Interweave Knits Summer 2006, e outra de costura!) e um jornal de uma associação canadiana de artesãos. Logo que tenha um bocadinho de tempo, tiro algumas fotografias para ilustrar!

2) Por falar em costura: estou cheia de vontade de aprender a costurar, embora só tenha uma máquina daquelas baratas que só faz ponto a direito (nem sequer ziguezague, o que era bem útil para rematar as pontas dos tecidos!). Desde que vi alguns padrões que aparentemente não são demasiado complexos, e que são de um estilo que favorece o meu corpo... Mas para já não, não posso. Haverá tempo. (Já vos disse que a minha avó era modista de alta costura? A sério, de vestidos de cerimónia! Infelizmente, não nasci a tempo de ver as peças bordadas à mão e com lantejoulas...)

3) Houve mais aumentos da minha stash, quer de fibras, quer de linhas, e mesmo de fusos, mas falta-me a paciência para actualizar no sítio certo.

4) Aproveitei o futebol para fazer alguma malha. Retomei as pobres esquecidas meias jaywalker (já passei o calcanhar da segunda), e comecei umas novas meias a usar restinhos de linha de meias. Receita simples e muito interessante. Hei-de escrever mais sobre isso.

5) Restinhos de linhas de meias esses que adquiri numa troca com outra tricotadeira. Eu enviei-lhe um novelo de linha para meia meu, e ela enviou-me um enorme saco de novelinhos de linha para meias com o dobro do peso! Depois ponho aqui fotos também! (Um beijinho, Laura!)

I have been busy, and tired, too. Not much knitting, not much time to post. No photos at all. I still have some things to say, though:

1) I have been in a swap initiative: the International Magazine Swap from Cotton Strudel. I have made a swap with a canadian weaver artist, Jen, (see her works here!) who, generously, sent me 2 magazines (a knitting one, Interweave Knits Summer 2006, and a sewing one!) and the newspaper of a canadian crafts association. As soon as I have a bit of time, I'll take some pictures to show you!

2) Speaking of sewing: I will want to learn how to sew, even though I only have a cheap nasty sewing machine which only sews straight ahead (not even zigzag, which would be very useful!) Ever since I saw some patterns which don't seem too complex, and which flatter my body type... But I can't now. Sometime later. (Have I told you my grandmother was a haute-couture seamstress? The real kind, of ceremony dresses! Unfortunately, I was born too late to see the hand embroidered dresses, with beads or paillettes...)

3) My stash has been increased, in the fiber kind, in the yarn kind and even in the spindle kind, but I am out of patience to post everything in the appropriate place.

4) During the World Cup games, I have knit a bit (yay!). I restarted the poor forgotten jaywalkers (am on the foot portion of the second one), and started some new socks using sock yarn mini-skeins of remainders. A simple and interesting pattern. I will write more about it.

5) I acquired this sock yarn remainder skeins on a swap with another knitter. I sent her a sock yarn skein of mine, and she sent me a big bag of mini sock-yarn balls with twice the weight! I will post photos later. (Thank you, Laura!)

Ao passear por blogues, encontrei isto: uma cobertura em malha para uma mopa de chão de madeira. Usando uma linha adequada (macia mas resistente), pode ser uma ideia.

While reading blogs, I found this: a knit cover for a mop for hardwood floor. Using an adequate yarn (soft yet resistant), it can be a nice idea.

Ideia para um novelo/One skein idea

Ao ler a Magknits deste mês, tive uma ideia para usar aqueles novelos soltos que temos sempre, lindos, mas que não chegam nem para um cachecol: O ponto aberto usado nesta saca faria uma pequena quantidade de linha render muito. É bonito e daria um belo cachecol. Ou se se tiver um pouquinho mais de linha, uma echarpe, ou mesmo um top ou casaquinho rendado (para vestir com um top ou uma t-shirt lisa por baixo, claro).

Note-se que a linha sugerida costuma ser trabalhada com agulha 4,5 mm, mas neste trabalho usam-se agulhas bem maiores, de 6 mm e de 10 mm. Isso ainda faz o fio render mais.

Reading this month's Magknits issue, I had one idea to use those odd balls and skeins of yarn we have, lovely, but without enough yarn for even just a scarf: The open stitch used in this bag would make a small amount of yarn go a long way. It would make great scarves. Or if you have a little more of yarn, a wrap or nice lacy tops or cardigans (to wear over a simple plain top or t-shirt, of course).

The suggested yarn usually is knitted with 4.5 mm needles, but in this project they use much bigger needles, 6 mm and 10 mm ones. So the yarn will go even a longer way.

1) Chegou ao fim o mês de Maio. Mês do verde no Project Spectrum. E eu nada tricotei em verde. :( Este mês só tricotei nos peixinhos da mini-manta...

2) Seguindo a ideia do verde=reutilizar, vários links com interesse: linhas recicladas de malhas (ambos nos EUA, mas também podem ver no ebay), como reciclar linhas de malhas que já não usamos (mesmo que industriais), reciclar roupa (não me inscrevi, mas vou tentar fazer remodelações a algumas roupas que já não uso. Logo que tenha tempo...)

O que fazer quando não há tempo nem dinheiro?/What to do when there is no time nor money?

Ainda aqui ando. Com muito que fazer, pouco tempo livre, e pouca malha feita... Nos tempos livres, mais alguns peixinhos para a mini-manta de restinhos de lã e outras linhas.

I am still here. With a lot to do, not much free time, and not much knitting done. In the few spare times, I have knit some more fishes for the samples mini-afghan.

Entretanto, não conseguindo ter tempo para fazer malha, vingo-me nas compras, claro está. E como fazer compras quando se está com pouco dinheiro? Criteriosamente!

Meanwhile, as I don't have time to knit, I shop, of course. How to shop when I am almost broke? Judiciously!

Caso 1: Um clube do livro contactou-me para que me tornasse sócia. As condições não são demasiado exigentes (comprar um total de 6 livros por ano não é exagerado), e como brinde inicial eu podia encomendar dois livros de uma pequena selecção e pagaria apenas 6 euros e tal (portes já incluídos). Ora na selecção havia um livro de malha, versão traduzida para português deste.

Case 1: A book club contacted me. The conditions are OK (I must buy 6 books per year, which is not exaggerate), and as a welcome present I could buy 2 books from a small selection paying only around 6 euro (shipping included). And in the selection there was a knitting book, the translated version of this one.

Já o tenho! (Juntamente com um livro de culinária). Embora tenha muitos modelos para criança, de que não preciso para já (nem eu nem os meus amigos ou familiares directos temos filhos ou estamos a planeá-los por agora), tem alguns modelos para adulto bem bonitos e que me atraem. Tem também explicações razoavelmente claras de como se faz intarsia e jacquard/fair isle. E o que eu paguei por ele é imbatível, logo...

I already have it! (Together with a cooking book). It has a lot of children's patterns, which I don't need now (neither me nor my friends or close family have kids or intend to have them now), but it has some adult patterns which I find attractive. It has also a nice section in the end that explains how to knit intarsia and fair isle. And I paid so little that I am happy!

Caso 2: Num fórum que frequento outra tricotadeira pôs à venda diversas coisas de que já não precisa, algumas com um belo desconto. E eu comprei 3 fusos (que vieram embalados com alguma fibra) e um livro por um preço simpático! E continuo à espreita...

Case 2: In a knitting forum I go to, another knitter was selling several things she doesn't need, some with a nice discount. And I bought 3 spindles (that came with some fiber as packaging) and a book for a nice price! And I keep looking for some nice bargain...

Voltando a casa depois da Páscoa, tinha duas surpresas à minha espera: uma boa e uma má.

A boa: um presente de uma amiga! Uma espuma de duche com cheiro a romã, morango e limão... Que aroma maravilhoso! Obrigada!

A má: aquelas-cujo-nome-não-deve-ser-pronunciado invadiram o meu armário e começaram a comer um casaco meu... (Sim, t..r..a..ç..a..s!) Claro que estou a tomar providências para que não ataquem mais roupa nenhuma nem comam a minha stash. Desejem-me sorte!

Coming back home after Easter, I had 2 surprises waiting for me: one good and one bad.

Good: a friend sent me a surprise present! A shower foam bath which smells like pomegranate, strawberry and lemon... Wonderful! Thanks (you know who you are)!

Bad: the-ones-who-must-not-be-named have invaded my closet and ate a bit of one coat of mine. (Yes, m..o..t..h..s!) Of course I am taking all measures to prevent them to eat more clothes or attack my stash (shudder!) Wish me luck!

Fiz um cachecol simples na última semana de Março, e este é para mim (depois de ter feito um para a minha mãe, um para o meu irmão e um para uma troca com a Noo). Usando o bouclé de seda e mohair que ganhei num concurso (e que já não se fabrica, para minha pena, porque é deliciosamente leve e macio), fiz isto:

I have knit a simple scarf for me in the last week of March, and this one is for me (after having knit one for my mother, one for my brother and one to trade with Noo. I used the silk mohair boucle I won in a contest (which was discontinued, to my chagrin, because it is wonderfully light and soft) to knit this:

Padrão: inventado, com base numa sugestão de alguém num encontro de tricotadeiras. Usando uma agulha bem maior que a recomendável para o fio (usei as de 8 mm, e a recomendada era 5.5 mm), montei 25 pontos (o que importa é ser número ímpar. Depois, é fazer P1, *YO, P2tog*, e repetir o entre asteriscos até ao fim da carreira. Virar as agulhas e fazer exactamente o mesmo na volta seguinte. E assim até acabar o fio. [desculpem, mas digo em inglês, porque em português parece que há várias terminologias. Em português, eu diria que faço sempre o primeiro ponto da volta em revezil, depois vou fazendo uma laça e dois juntos em revezil até ao fim. Mas como há quem chame liga ao que eu chamo revezil, e há quem chame revezil ao que eu chamo canelado, fico-me pelo inglês que pelo menos é unívoco].

Notas sobre o padrão: Tinha pouco fio. Por isso, fui fazendo amostras com diversas agulhas e diversos pontos, usando 10 metros de fio, para ver que dimensão teria o cachecol final em cada caso. Ao fazer as amostras, apercebi-me que com certas combinações de agulha, ponto e número de malhas montadas obtinha aquele efeito em ziguezague. Com pequenas variações perdia-se o ziguezague e as cores misturavam-se de forma desinteressante. Por isso, foi só procurar uma combinação que funcionasse, usando a Matemática e a intuição. A Matemática é nossa amiga, fixem isso que é importante!

Ficou macio, leve e arejado (claro). Tem bom cair e um tamanho que me agrada.

Pattern: I invented it, from a suggestion someone gave me on a knitters meeting. Using a much bigger needle size than the recommended to this yarn (I used 8 mm, when the recommended was 5.5 mm), I cast on 25 stitches (what matters is that you cast on an odd number of stitches). Then, P1, *YO, P2tog*, and repeat the part between stars, until the end of the row. Turn needles and knit exactly the same until the end of the row. And so on until the yarn is almost all used. Cast off.

Notes about pattern: I did not have much yarn. So, I knitted several swatches in several stitches and using several needle sizes, using 10 meters of this yarn, to calculate what size would have the final scarf in each case. When knitting the swatches, I saw that some combinations of needle, stitch and number of cast-on stitches gave this interesting zig-zag pooling effect. A small variation would make the zig-zag disappear, and the colours would mix in an uninteresting way. So, I just had to search a combination that would work, using both Mathematics and intuition. Mathematics is our friend, believe me, this is important!

The scarf is soft, light and airy (of course). It has a good drape and I like its size.

Faltava revelar a quem é que eu mandei presentes... Para surpresa minha, calhou-me a Sally, que me tinha dado presentes no SP6. Para mim foi muito divertido, e ela gostou das prendas, logo ficámos todas contentes. Mais uma ronda do Secret Pal que correu lindamente :)

In SP7, my spoilee has already received the package in which I reveal myself. I was surprised to be spoiling Sally, which had been the one who sent me presents on SP6. It was fun to me, and she liked the presents, so we are both happy. Another round of Secret Pal which went great :)

Desta vez não vou participar no Secret Pal 8, embora goste. Se tudo correr bem, participarei no SP9, quando houver.

This time I will pass Secret Pal 8, though I really like present exchanges. If everything goes smoothly, I will participate on SP9.

Novo mês no Project Spectrum: Abril é o mês de laranja e amarelo. Que material tenho eu laranja e amarelo para trabalhar? 1) a linha em tons de fogo que a Sharon, minha SP7, enviou; 2) merino laceweight, laranja; 3) merino para fiar, laranja; 4)uma meada de merino 6-ply, alaranjada; 5) linha laranja que a Filomena, minha SP5, me deu; e finalmente 6) Bouclé amarelo torrado!

Conclui-se que: gosto mais de laranja (em particular cor de tijolo) que de amarelo [verdade], que o laranja me fica melhor que o amarelo [há tons de amarelo que me ficam bem, mas não são fáceis de encontrar], e que me ofereceram linhas laranja e não amarelas. Ainda assim, há tons de amarelo de que gosto, mas pondo-me a pensar, acho que só tenho duas peças de roupa amarelas, uma t-shirt e uma camisola. Curiosamente, ambas cor-de-mostarda.

New month in Project Spectrum: April is for orange and yellow. What orange and yellow fibery things have I to work with? 1) the fire coloured yarn that Sharon, my SP7, sent me; 2) orange merino laceweight; 3) orange merino roving; 4)one skein of orangy merino 6-ply; 5) orange yarn that Filomena, my SP5, gave me; and finally 6) dark yellow bouclé!

We can conclude that: I prefer orange (and mostly brick colour) to yellow [true]; that orange suits my skin colour better than yellow [some kinds of yellow look nice in me, but they're hard to find]; and that people give me orange yarns, not yellow ones. There are kinds of yellow I like, but I must admit I only own 2 yellow garments, a t-shirt and a sweater, both mustard colour!

Ontem recebi dois pacotes da minha SP7. Ela já me tinha dito que tinha enviado um, e depois o outro, mas por qualquer motivo chegaram ao mesmo tempo. Segue-se a foto-reportagem, e no fim a revelação de quem ela é!

Yesterday I received 2 packages from my SP7. She had already told me she had sent one, and then the other, but for some reason they arrived at the same time. Photos and explanation below, and in the end I reveal who she is!

Os dois pacotes/The two packages.

O que estava dentro do pacote maior/What was inside the bigger package.

No pacote mais pequeno vinha um fuso (o meu primeiro, dado que ainda não consegui comprar um, apesar de ter tentado!), instruções e 100g de lã para fiar Falkland branca (bom toque)./The smaller package had a spindle (my first spindle, because I have tried to buy one but there are always problems!), instructions and 100g of Falkland white wool roving(nice to the touch).

O resto estava no outro pacote./The rest was in the bigger package.

O mesmo fuso, uma bolsinha muito gira e seis marcadores (stitch markers) cor-de-rosa que na foto não se vêem muito bem, com borboletas e missangas cristalinas./The same spindle, a very pretty little bag and six pink stitch markers, which can hardly be seen in the photo, with butterflies and crystal beads.

Chocolate amargo orgânico com cerejas inteiras (deve ser delicioso!)/Bittersweet dark organic chocolate with whole cherries (sounds yummy!).

Lush bath ball! :)para me mimar/to spoil myself :)

Ao lado da Falkland branca (que já referi), 50g de merino azul céu (mais bonito que na foto) para fiar. Muito, muito macio e sedoso./Next to the white Falkland roving (which I already talked about) 50g of sky blue merino roving (much prettier than in the photo). Very, very soft and silky.

Linhas pintadas à mão, com cores complexas e vivas, como eu gosto./Handpainted wool yarns, with complex, secondary but deep colours, as I like.

E, finalmente, para grande surpresa minha/And finally a big surprise:
Um cachecol feito à mão para mim (o rosa é mais bonito que na foto), grosso, com uma combinação de 3 fios. E um novelo de merino preta que sobrou do cachecol e que ela me enviou com um modelo de aquece-mãos./A handknit scarf for me (the pink is much prettier than in the photo), thick, with 3 yarns combined. And a ball of black merino that was leftover from the scarf and that she sent me with a pattern for wristwarmers.

E um postal que me esqueci de fotografar./And a postcard, but I forgot to take a picture of it.

Meias: Coisas que aprendi/Socks: Things I learned

1) Confiar mais em mim do que no modelo/padrão. Sou capaz de o alterar para ter em conta a minha tensão diferente, o tamanho dos meus pés, a minha maneira de tricotar. / Trust myself more than the pattern. I am able to change it to accomodate my different gauge, my feet dimensions, my own knitting way.

2) As meias alargam com o uso. As meias vermelhas são lindas, mas têm tendência a cair-me pelas pernas e podiam estar mais justas. Fazer as meias com "negative ease": desde que consigam passar o calcanhar, tudo bem. / Socks stretch with wear. My red socks are beautiful, but they have a tendency to fall down my legs and could be tighter. Knit socks with "negative ease": as long as they pass the heel, everything is fine.

3) Devo ser única na espécie, mas: fazer meias "toe-up" NÃO garante que não se venha a ter falta de linha. Eu tinha 2 novelos e fiz as meias toe-up, um novelo para cada meia. Terminei a primeira meia antes do fim do primeiro novelo, e fiquei com um restinho de linha de sobra. Na segunda meia, o novelo acabou a 5 voltas do fim. Juntei-lhe a linha que sobrou do outro, e mesmo assim a segunda meia teve de ficar mais curta que a primeira (mas não se nota). / I must be the only person in the world that, when knitting socks toe-up, using one ball of yarn to each sock, finds she doesn't have enough yarn! I finished my first sock before the end of the first ball, and had some leftover yarn. In the second sock, the ball of yarn finished 5 rows before the end of the sock. I had to join the leftover yarn from the other sock, and still the socks have a different leg length (I don't mind).

4) Tenho de experimentar mais modelos de calcanhar e de "toe", para escolher de quais gosto mais. E tenho de arranjar DPNs de 2.5mm, urgentemente (gosto das meias com um tecido firme, mas 2mm é fino demais: demora muito tempo e faz dores no pulso!). / I must try several ways to knit the heel and the toe to choose which ones I like best. And I must find 2.5mm DPNs urgently (I like firm socks, but 2mm is too thin, takes a lot of time and makes my wrists hurt!).

5) Tanto gosto de meias "toe-up" como "cuff-down". Gosto de coisas diferentes em cada método. E assim posso variar. / I like both toe-up and cuff-down socks. I like different things in each method. And this way I can vary a bit.

5)Tenho de fazer estimativas conservadoras quanto ao tamanho da meia: se sobrar linha, não faz mal, um dia faço umas meias às riscas! Tenho também de arranjar uma balança electrónica de cozinha. / I must make more conservative estimates on the sock size: if there is leftover yarn, no problem, I can knit a striped pair later on! I must get an electronic kitchen scale, also.

6)Adoro fazer meias! / I love knitting socks!

Meias que gostaria de fazer quando tiver tempo para aprender jacquard: estas maravilhosas da Grumperina (num par de cores mais discreto, para não ficar como ela que diz que não as vai usar nunca) e algum par semelhante a este.

Finalmente acabei-as! A minha pele está um pouco melhor e permitiu-me tricotar!/Finally complete! My skin is a bit better and I could knit!

Trago-as calçadas hoje. São quentes, mesmo sendo rendadas (bem mais quentes que meias industriais!), são confortáveis e estou orgulhosa delas!/They're on my feet today. They are much warmer than industrial socks, even though they are lace socks, they are comfortable and I'm proud of them!

Tirei fotos em casa, antes de sair, mas não ficaram grande coisa. Voltei a tirar fotos ao fim da tarde, quando toda a gente saiu do meu gabinete. Sempre à espera que alguém entrasse de repente e me visse de calças arregaçadas, sem sapatos, em posições estranhas a tirar fotografias às minhas meias (hmm... o que ficariam a pensar a meu respeito?)/I took some pictures at home, in the morning, but they didn't come out great. I took photos again at the end of the afternoon, when everybody left my office. Always looking to see if someone would enter suddenly and see me with my trousers rolled up, without shoes, in weird positions taking pictures of my socks (hmm... what would they think about me?)

Coisas que me incomodam:

1) Tive consulta de dermatologia. O tratamento está a pôr-me a pele extremamente seca e sensível, e não consigo tricotar mais de duas ou três carreiras nas meias porque a linha põe-me o pescoço vermelho e a picar muito :( [A linha não é áspera, e antes conseguia trabalhar bem com ela, a minha pele é que está extraordinariamente sensível].

2) Logo, as meias quase não avançam, e pouco posso tricotar.

3) Ainda não comprei pilhas para a máquina fotográfica.

Coisas boas:

1) Não tive medalha de ouro nos Olímpicos, mas tive medalha de prata (mais de metade a 2/3 do objecto feitos durante o prazo).

2) O problema de pele não me impede de fiar.

3) Project Spectrum. Em Março, vermelhos e rosas. As meias vermelhas, quando a pele melhorar, e de resto já tenho em mente um projecto: fiar e tingir lã...

4) Existe um botão para quem ainda não acabou as Jaywalkers como eu (e enquanto a pele não melhorar, não posso). Jaycrawlers (hmm, isso do crawl lembra-me que tenho de me convencer a recomeçar a natação...)

Things that upset me:

1) I went to the skin doctor and started a new treatment, which is leaving my skin extremely dry and sensitive. I cannot knit more than 2 or 3 rows in my socks because my neck gets red and itchy :( [The yarn is not harsh, and before I could work well with it, my skin is abnormally sensitive now].

2) So, the socks don't get finished, and I cannot knit much.

3) I still haven't bought batteries to my digital camera.

Good things:

1) I didn't get a gold medal in the Olympics, but I got a silver one (more than half to 2/3 of the object knitted in time).

2) The skin problem allows me to spin.

3) Project Spectrum. In March, reds and pinks. The red socks, when my skin gets betterm and another project already: spin and dye wool...

4) There is a button for people who still haven't finished their Jaywalkers like me (as long as my skin is like this, I can't finish them). Jaycrawlers (hmm, the crawl thing reminds me I must convince myself to restart swimming...)

De facto, atingiu já o calcanhar da segunda meia, e desta vez já sabe as alterações a fazer. Foi por isso com grande surpresa que recebemos a notícia da sua desistência da competição. Mais uma vez, temos a entrevista exclusiva...

Boa tarde, TGZ. Foi com grande surpresa que a equipa portuguesa recebeu a notícia da sua desistência. Quer explicar-nos o que sucedeu?

(TGZ): Boa tarde. De facto, a segunda meia vai em bom andamento, o calcanhar vai a mais de meio e tudo corre bem. Porém, tenho de abandonar a competição hoje porque vou visitar a família e só volto na Segunda-feira, e não seria justo estar com eles sem lhes dar atenção para acabar a segunda meia a tempo. Além disso, lá não tenho acesso ao meu blogue e não posso pôr aqui fotografias. Portanto, parece-me mais justo desistir da competição agora.

(Jornalista): Mas isso não fará com que nunca mais acabe a segunda meia?

(TGZ): Não. Já defini para mim mesma que o desafio permanece: quando chegar na Segunda-feira, o tempo recomeça a contar para mim como se fosse Sexta à noite. E terei portanto de acabar a segunda meia até Quarta de manhã. Se o fizer, considerarei que cumpri o desafio. Não sei se os juízes aceitarão esta variante da competição, mas mesmo que fique desqualificada das medalhas de ouro, sentirei que cumpri o meu dever e que venci o desafio.

(Jornalista): O que aprendeu nesta competição?

(TGZ): Aprendi que tenho mais tempo e mais capacidade de tricotar do que julgava. Aprendi que gosto de fazer meias com agulhas mais grossas do que de 2mm (estou mesmo a precisar de umas DPNs de 2,25mm, ou 2,5mm ou 2,75mm, outras de 3mm e talvez mais grossas), embora eu vá terminar as Jaywalkers em agulha fina. Mas vou procurar ter sempre umas meias simples em andamento como projecto para trazer na carteira. Preciso de arranjar mais agulhas linha de meias!

Boa sorte aos que permanecem na competição, e até Segunda!"

So, I will have to finish my socks until Wednesday morning. If I do that, I will consider I fulfilled my challenge. I don't know if the judges will accept this variant of the competition, but even if I am disqualified from the gold medals, I will feel I have completed the challenge and won!

(Journalist): What have you learned in this competition?

(TGZ): I learned I have more time and more ability to knit than I thought I did. I learned that I love to knit sock with thicker DPNs (I really need to buy more sets of DPNs: 2.25mm, 2.5mm, 2.75mm, another one of 3mm and maybe thicker!), but I will still finish my Jaywalkers on fine needles. From now on, I will try to have always some simple socks in the needles as a project to carry with me on my handbag. I need to buy sock yarn and needles!

(TGZ) Sim, realmente foi. A princípio fiquei muito desanimada, quando gastei uma noite inteira a desfazer o que tinha feito e apanhar as malhas, mas agora já estou quase a acabar a primeira meia. Contudo, tenho receio de que o atraso que isto me provocou seja irremediável.

(Jornalista) O que tem a dizer sobre os boatos de que se encerrou como uma eremita e recusa o contacto com outras pessoas?

(TGZ) Nego, nego-os completamente. Já fui ao cinema na semana passada, e até fui a um encontro de tricotadeiras onde não fiz nada nestas meias, apenas fiei.

(Jornalista) Mas isso não será contrário ao espírito olímpico?

(TGZ) Não, pelo contrário. Se uma colega fiandeira com mais experiência se dispôs a ensinar-me a fazer fio com 2 cabos, eu, olimpicamente, aproveitei a oportunidade de aprendizagem. E descansei os pulsos!

(Jornalista) Quer deixar alguma mensagem aos nossos leitores?

(TGZ) Yes, it really was. In the beginning I was very upset, when I spent a whole night frogging what I had knit and putting stitches back in the needles, but now I am almost fisishing my first sock. Still, I am afraid I am already too late.

(Journalist) There are rumors that you became a hermit and refuse the contact with other people. What do you have to say?

(TGZ) I deny those rumors. I went to the cinema last week, and even to a knitter's meeting where I didn't knit on those socks at all, I just spinned a lot.

(Journalist) Isn't that contrary to the Olympic spirit?

(TGZ) No, quite the contrary. If a fellow spinner with more experience nicely wanted to teach me how to make 2-ply, I, olympically, learned. And rested my wrists!
