Meias vermelhas/ Red socks

Finalmente acabei-as! My skin is a bit better and I could knit!

Trago-as calçadas hoje. They're on my feet today. They are much warmer than industrial socks, even though they are lace socks, they are comfortable and I'm proud of them!

I took some pictures at home, in the morning, but they didn't come out great. I took photos again at the end of the afternoon, when everybody left my office. Always looking to see if someone would enter suddenly and see me with my trousers rolled up, without shoes, in weird positions taking pictures of my socks (hmm... what would they think about me?)

Mais comentários nas legendas./More comments in the captions.

Uma foto em casa. Desfocada e azulada demais./A photo at home. Blurred and too blueish.

O rendado. E a cor como deve ser./The lace. And the true colour.

Manchas de cor diferentes em cada meia. A parte de cima./Each sock pooled differently. The top view.

Gosto delas assim!/The sole side shows more different pooling. I like my fraternal socks!

Fotografia extra, só para poderem imaginar a bela figura que seria se alguém me visse.../Gratuitous extra photo, so that you can imagine the weird looks I would get if someone saw me...

Blargh!

-----
Things that upset me:

1) I went to the skin doctor and started a new treatment, which is leaving my skin extremely dry and sensitive. I cannot knit more than 2 or 3 rows in my socks because my neck gets red and itchy :( [The yarn is not harsh, and before I could work well with it, my skin is abnormally sensitive now].

2) So, the socks don't get finished, and I cannot knit much.

3) I still haven't bought batteries to my digital camera.

Good things:

1) I didn't get a gold medal in the Olympics, but I got a silver one (more than half to 2/3 of the object knitted in time).

2) The skin problem allows me to spin.

3) Project Spectrum. In March, reds and pinks. The red socks, when my skin gets betterm and another project already: spin and dye wool...

4) There is a button for people who still haven't finished their Jaywalkers like me (as long as my skin is like this, I can't finish them). Jaycrawlers (hmm, the crawl thing reminds me I must convince myself to restart swimming...)

Olympic Newsflash 5

Scroll down to the English version.

"(Journalist): With the Knitting Olympics almost in the end, the knitlete TGZ has achieved a good speed and everything seems ready to complete her socks on Sunday. In fact, she is knitting the heel of the second sock, and this time the pattern is already corrected to fit her foot. So, it was a great surprise and shock to the Portuguese team when she announced she was leaving the competition today. Once again, we have an exclusive interview...

Good afternoon, TGZ. It was with great surprise that the Portuguese team received the news of your leaving the competition. Could you explain what happened?

(TGZ): Good afternoon. It's true: the second sock is going fine, the heel is more than half done and everything is going all right. But I have to leave the competition today because I am going to visit family and I only come back on Monday, and it wouldn't be fair to them if I stood with them without paying attention just to finish the second sock in time. Besides, I cannot acess my blog over there so I cannot post photos here. So, it seemed better to give up the competition now.

(Journalist): Isn't that going to lead you to never finish your second sock?

(TGZ): No. I defined to myself that the challenge remains: when I come back on Monday, time starts counting again as if it were Friday night. So, I will have to finish my socks until Wednesday morning. If I do that, I will consider I fulfilled my challenge. I don't know if the judges will accept this variant of the competition, but even if I am disqualified from the gold medals, I will feel I have completed the challenge and won!

(Journalist): What have you learned in this competition?

(TGZ): I learned I have more time and more ability to knit than I thought I did. I learned that I love to knit sock with thicker DPNs (I really need to buy more sets of DPNs: 2.25mm, 2.5mm, 2.75mm, another one of 3mm and maybe thicker!), but I will still finish my Jaywalkers on fine needles. From now on, I will try to have always some simple socks in the needles as a project to carry with me on my handbag. I need to buy sock yarn and needles!

Good luck to the ones who are still on competition, and see you on Monday!"

"(Journalist) After the unfortunate heel event, the youg Portuguese knitllete seems to be recovering the several days she lost with this. Still, her confidence in finishing the challenge in time is going down. Rumor has it that she disappeared from other person's contact and stays at home like a hermit. We managed to get an exclusive interview.

Good afternoon. Great recovery, in the last few days.

(TGZ) Yes, it really was. In the beginning I was very upset, when I spent a whole night frogging what I had knit and putting stitches back in the needles, but now I am almost fisishing my first sock. Still, I am afraid I am already too late.

(Journalist) There are rumors that you became a hermit and refuse the contact with other people. What do you have to say?

(TGZ) I deny those rumors. I went to the cinema last week, and even to a knitter's meeting where I didn't knit on those socks at all, I just spinned a lot.

(Journalist) Isn't that contrary to the Olympic spirit?

(TGZ) No, quite the contrary. If a fellow spinner with more experience nicely wanted to teach me how to make 2-ply, I, olympically, learned. And rested my wrists!

(Journalist) Do you have something to say to our readers?

(TGZ) Yes, I want to ask them to support two other Portuguese knitletes Ana and Wool (alsohere)"

Olympic newsflash 3: Please help!

(Just in English today, I'm in a hurry)

"(Journalist): After a great performance this weekend, when TGZ completed the foot and half the heel by knitting everywhere: on the way to a friend's house, in the bus stop, in the bus, at home, even in bed, today a most unfortunate turn of events set back her efforts. She is here with us now, and is asking for the help of knitters everywhere.

TGZ, what would you like to tell our fellow knitters?

(TGZ): Fellow knitters, especially toe-up sock knitters, please help me! I have been knitting my 1st toe-up sock just fine and have just finished the heel (short-row heel). I tried it on my foot, and it looks weird! :'( It seems there is excess fabric. (On the other hand, it would make a perfect toe: I will keep it on my bookmarks for a toe). I will need to alter it somehow, as it seems my heel is a bit rounder than they expected. Please tell me: how can I correct this heel?

(Journalist, to the viewers): This knitlete needs your help! I would help her myself, but I don't know a knit from a purl... (turning to TGZ) Don't get upset, there's still time to catch on with your knitting in the next days. Good luck!"

Other info:This is the pattern, and this is the yarn. I'm using 3mm DPNs and getting the same gauge they suggest in the pattern.

"(Journalist) The competitions have started, and the young knitlete from the Portuguese team of toe-up socks seems in good shape. Here she comes from the first eliminatories.

Lady, please, just a few words for the media. How was the first eliminatory?

(TGZ, panting) Better than I was expecting... (puff...puff...) At first I got nervous, because I wasn't understanding how to knit the toe, but as soon as I understood, it went fine... (shakes the muscles to relax)

(Journalist) I couldn't fail to notice that you have a different style of knitting. Which sparked some discussion among the jury.

(TGZ) It's true, but I've got confirmation that my style, being less usual, is accepted. I knit wrong side out, and using the information I collected here, I was able to invert all the pattern, so that I obtain the same result. It was exhilarating to see that K2tog and SSK on the RS looks exactly the same as SSP P2tog tbl on the WS.

(Journalist) I see you are more motivated. Good perspective of finishing your challenge in time?

(TGZ) Yes, my motivation grew when I saw that Portugal sent an athlete to the Torino Winter Olympics! But it is still early to know if I will be able to finish my challenge in time or not. I have other socks on the needles, and next weekens I will have a knitters meeting where I want to learn to make a 2-ply yarn, and that will take time that is needed for this challenge. And there's also the thesis... and classes that start again in a week!

I'm sorry, I must go to the showers!"

Olympic Newsflash 1

(em grego antigo, da Fyberduck/In ancient Greek, from Fyberduck)

Começa hoje às 19h (hora local)! It starts today at 19:00 (local time)!

Using the idea I found here, I will tell my progress like an interview (see rough English translation after the whole Portuguese version, sorry):

(TGZ) Muito obrigada!"

In English:
"(Journalist) There's a lot of bustling in the rooms of the small Portuguese team for the Knitting Olympics. In just 3 more hours, the Games will begin, so now is the time for the final preparations! Let's interview a young knitlete of the sock-knitting modality:

Good afternoon! It's the first time Portugal participates in the Winter (Knitting) Olympics! How does it feel to be a part of this historical event?

(TGZ) It's a great responsability, and I am very happy to be here!

(Journalist) On your case, when does the competition start?

(TGZ) To me it's tonight. As I'm going out for coffee with some friends after dinner, this means I must go home early, warm the pre-cooked dinner on the microwave and cast on immediately! That way, I can try to knit a bit more at the coffee-house! I must not loose time!

(Journalist) What will be your weaknesses and strengths?

(TGZ) One could say that my biggest weakness, besides inexperience (these will be my first toe-up socks, and my second pair of socks in general!), will be concentrating on this challenge. Truth is I am working in another sock pair which isn't finished yet, and spinning is a sport that I have recently fell in love with, to which I dedicate some time. My biggest strength is the fact that these socks will be knitted in larger size DPNs than the previous ones, and, of course, the stong motivation that the olympic village gives to you!

(Journalist) I will not take you more time. I wish you good luck and that you may be able to complete your challenge!

(TGZ) Thank you very much!"

Meias, ainda/ More socks

1) Jaywalkers

O prazo do knit-along acaba no dia 14, creio. Para mim, vai ser difícil!
I finished one sock (it fought back, but I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot!) and started the second. I don't have enough yarn (I had to start using the second ball before the end of the first sock), but a friend is going to get a third ball of this yarn in a store that sells it. It's not going to be easy to finish the socks in time for the knit-along...

2) Knitting Olympics

It seems there are more than 3000 participants! And, being a slow sock knitter, I will probably not finish the (red) socks on the 26th, but quite after... Generously, the organizers (by mistake) wrote that my challenge is: tar.gzip - Toe. That's it, just the toe ;) I intend to break that record, though!

Treinos e um recorde/Training and a (World?) record

Still on the Knitting Olympics, I have chosen the pattern. On Thursday I trained a bit (knit a swatch to check the gauge in 3 mm DPNs), and one of the patterns asks exactly for the gauge I obtained. So, I will knit these socks.

As I love the little buttons, I went to get here one which shows the "team" in which I will partcipate (although I could as well choose the chocolate team, the cheese team or even the red wine team... I admit I love the pleasures of the table!):

And with these socks, I can participate in another knitalong at the same time: this one!

This means, I have 3 Knit-alongs for the same socks: this one, this one and this one. Can I achieve more?

Consigo!
Yes I can! With these socks (and the Jaywalkers), I will help achieve this objective. At least it is a good excuse to join another little button to the sidebar... I wonder if I am beating a world record by now?

2006 Knitting Olympics again

Assim, vou participar nesta perspectiva: Apreciar o processo.

As you have read, I will participate on the 2006 Knitting Olympics. I guess I'm the only Portuguese athlete, and I will participate in a speciality where I'm a slow beginner (socks). So, I intend to participate in this perspective: Enjoy the process.

Is this against the olympic sports ideal? No, quite the contrary, as I can avow by my experience. At school, I was always one of the worst students in Physical Education. I was short-sighted, fat, clumsy and without coordination (except fine hand-coordination). But I never failed this subject (and there were kids who did), and once I had a nice average-to-high classification. And the teacher explained why: because I never gave up. I completed everything she told us to do, even when I was the last and everybody had already finished several minutes ago and the "worst", like me, had given up or cheated. And I had fun in not cheating and not giving up, even if I was the last one. That's what I will do with those socks. Even if I don't finish in time, I will try. And I will have a lot of fun. Even if I finish one month later...

Because Portugal has never participated on the Winter Olympics, and I will be the first (in the sock knitting modality :) )

2006 Knitting Olympics

You can see the rules here. I proposed to knit a pair of toe-up socks. Now I need to find a suitable pattern which is not simply stockinette, to knit with the red sock yarn my SP5 gave me. Which of these patterns would look better in red: this pattern or this one? Have you got a better suggestion? If you do, please post it in the comments.
