"(Jornalista): Com os Jogos Olímpicos da Malha quase a terminar, o desempenho da atleta TGZ voltou a atingir um bom ritmo e tudo parece preparado para que consiga terminar as meias no Domingo. De facto, atingiu já o calcanhar da segunda meia, e desta vez já sabe as alterações a fazer. Foi por isso com grande surpresa que recebemos a notícia da sua desistência da competição. Mais uma vez, temos a entrevista exclusiva...

Boa tarde, TGZ. Foi com grande surpresa que a equipa portuguesa recebeu a notícia da sua desistência. Quer explicar-nos o que sucedeu?

(TGZ): Boa tarde. De facto, a segunda meia vai em bom andamento, o calcanhar vai a mais de meio e tudo corre bem. Porém, tenho de abandonar a competição hoje porque vou visitar a família e só volto na Segunda-feira, e não seria justo estar com eles sem lhes dar atenção para acabar a segunda meia a tempo. Além disso, lá não tenho acesso ao meu blogue e não posso pôr aqui fotografias. Portanto, parece-me mais justo desistir da competição agora.

(Jornalista): Mas isso não fará com que nunca mais acabe a segunda meia?

(TGZ): Não. Já defini para mim mesma que o desafio permanece: quando chegar na Segunda-feira, o tempo recomeça a contar para mim como se fosse Sexta à noite. E terei portanto de acabar a segunda meia até Quarta de manhã. Se o fizer, considerarei que cumpri o desafio. Não sei se os juízes aceitarão esta variante da competição, mas mesmo que fique desqualificada das medalhas de ouro, sentirei que cumpri o meu dever e que venci o desafio.

(Jornalista): O que aprendeu nesta competição?

(TGZ): Aprendi que tenho mais tempo e mais capacidade de tricotar do que julgava. Aprendi que gosto de fazer meias com agulhas mais grossas do que de 2mm (estou mesmo a precisar de umas DPNs de 2,25mm, ou 2,5mm ou 2,75mm, outras de 3mm e talvez mais grossas), embora eu vá terminar as Jaywalkers em agulha fina. Mas vou procurar ter sempre umas meias simples em andamento como projecto para trazer na carteira. Preciso de arranjar mais agulhas linha de meias!

(TGZ): Good afternoon. It's true: the second sock is going fine, the heel is more than half done and everything is going all right. But I have to leave the competition today because I am going to visit family and I only come back on Monday, and it wouldn't be fair to them if I stood with them without paying attention just to finish the second sock in time. Besides, I cannot acess my blog over there so I cannot post photos here. So, it seemed better to give up the competition now.

(Journalist): Isn't that going to lead you to never finish your second sock?

(TGZ): No. I defined to myself that the challenge remains: when I come back on Monday, time starts counting again as if it were Friday night. So, I will have to finish my socks until Wednesday morning. If I do that, I will consider I fulfilled my challenge. I don't know if the judges will accept this variant of the competition, but even if I am disqualified from the gold medals, I will feel I have completed the challenge and won!

(Journalist): What have you learned in this competition?

(TGZ): I learned I have more time and more ability to knit than I thought I did. I learned that I love to knit sock with thicker DPNs (I really need to buy more sets of DPNs: 2.25mm, 2.5mm, 2.75mm, another one of 3mm and maybe thicker!), but I will still finish my Jaywalkers on fine needles. From now on, I will try to have always some simple socks in the needles as a project to carry with me on my handbag. I need to buy sock yarn and needles!

"(Jornalista) Depois do desaire do calcanhar com tecido a mais, a jovem atleta portuguesa parece estar a recuperar do atraso de vários dias que isso implicou. Contudo, a sua confiança em terminar o desafio no prazo ficou bastante abalada. Corre o boato que isso a levou a desaparecer do contacto de outras pessoas e a encerrar-se como uma eremita. Conseguimos uma entrevista exclusiva com ela.

Boa tarde. Foi uma grande recuperação, nos últimos dias.

(TGZ) Sim, realmente foi. A princípio fiquei muito desanimada, quando gastei uma noite inteira a desfazer o que tinha feito e apanhar as malhas, mas agora já estou quase a acabar a primeira meia. Contudo, tenho receio de que o atraso que isto me provocou seja irremediável.

(Jornalista) O que tem a dizer sobre os boatos de que se encerrou como uma eremita e recusa o contacto com outras pessoas?

(TGZ) Nego, nego-os completamente. Já fui ao cinema na semana passada, e até fui a um encontro de tricotadeiras onde não fiz nada nestas meias, apenas fiei.

(Jornalista) Mas isso não será contrário ao espírito olímpico?

(TGZ) Não, pelo contrário. Se uma colega fiandeira com mais experiência se dispôs a ensinar-me a fazer fio com 2 cabos, eu, olimpicamente, aproveitei a oportunidade de aprendizagem. E descansei os pulsos!

(Jornalista) Quer deixar alguma mensagem aos nossos leitores?

(TGZ) Sim, quero pedir-lhes que apoiem mais duas atletas portuguesas desta competição de malha: a Ana e a Wool (também aqui)"

(TGZ) Yes, it really was. In the beginning I was very upset, when I spent a whole night frogging what I had knit and putting stitches back in the needles, but now I am almost fisishing my first sock. Still, I am afraid I am already too late.

(Journalist) There are rumors that you became a hermit and refuse the contact with other people. What do you have to say?

(TGZ) I deny those rumors. I went to the cinema last week, and even to a knitter's meeting where I didn't knit on those socks at all, I just spinned a lot.

(Journalist) Isn't that contrary to the Olympic spirit?

(TGZ) No, quite the contrary. If a fellow spinner with more experience nicely wanted to teach me how to make 2-ply, I, olympically, learned. And rested my wrists!

(Journalist) Do you have something to say to our readers?

(TGZ) Yes, I want to ask them to support two other Portuguese knitletes Ana and Wool (alsohere)"

Olympic newsflash 3: Please help!

(Just in English today, I'm in a hurry)

(TGZ): Fellow knitters, especially toe-up sock knitters, please help me! I have been knitting my 1st toe-up sock just fine and have just finished the heel (short-row heel). I tried it on my foot, and it looks weird! :'( It seems there is excess fabric. (On the other hand, it would make a perfect toe: I will keep it on my bookmarks for a toe). I will need to alter it somehow, as it seems my heel is a bit rounder than they expected. Please tell me: how can I correct this heel?

"(Jornalista) As competições já tiveram início, e a jovem atleta da equipa portuguesa de meias parece em boa forma. Aí vem ela da primeira eliminatória.

Só umas palavrinhas para a comunicação social, por favor. Que tal a primeira eliminatória?

(TGZ, ofegante) Correu melhor do que eu estava à espera... (puff...puff...) A princípio fiquei assustada, porque não estava a perceber bem o método da biqueira das meias, mas quando percebi, até correu bem... (agita os músculos para descontrair)

(Jornalista) Não pude deixar de reparar que tem um estilo diferente do habitual. O que, aliás, provocou discussão entre o júri.

(TGZ) Sim, mas já confirmei que o meu estilo, sendo pouco comum, é aceite. Eu tricoto do avesso, e com a ajuda de informação que recolhi aqui, consegui inverter o padrão todo de maneira a obter o mesmo resultado. Foi maravilhoso para mim verificar que K2tog e SSK do direito dá exactamente o mesmo resultado que SSP P2tog tbl do avesso.

(Jornalista) Vejo que está mais motivada. Boas perspectivas de acabar o desafio no tempo previsto?

(TGZ) Sim, a motivação aumentou quando vi que Portugal tem um atleta nos Olímpicos de Inverno de Turim! Mas ainda é cedo para saber se vou conseguir completar o desafio a tempo ou não. Tenho outras meias entre mãos, e no próximo fim-de-semana vou ter de novo um encontro onde quero aprender a fazer fio com dois cabos, e isso consome tempo que é preciso para este desafio. Sem falar na tese... e nas aulas que recomeçam daqui a uma semana!

Tenho de ir para o balneário, peço desculpa!"

(TGZ, panting) Better than I was expecting... (puff...puff...) At first I got nervous, because I wasn't understanding how to knit the toe, but as soon as I understood, it went fine... (shakes the muscles to relax)

(Journalist) I couldn't fail to notice that you have a different style of knitting. Which sparked some discussion among the jury.

(TGZ) It's true, but I've got confirmation that my style, being less usual, is accepted. I knit wrong side out, and using the information I collected here, I was able to invert all the pattern, so that I obtain the same result. It was exhilarating to see that K2tog and SSK on the RS looks exactly the same as SSP P2tog tbl on the WS.

(Journalist) I see you are more motivated. Good perspective of finishing your challenge in time?

(TGZ) Yes, my motivation grew when I saw that Portugal sent an athlete to the Torino Winter Olympics! But it is still early to know if I will be able to finish my challenge in time or not. I have other socks on the needles, and next weekens I will have a knitters meeting where I want to learn to make a 2-ply yarn, and that will take time that is needed for this challenge. And there's also the thesis... and classes that start again in a week!
