Olympic Newsflash 2

(Já tenho um botão!/I have a button!)

Scroll down to read the English translation.

"(Journalist) The competitions have started, and the young knitlete from the Portuguese team of toe-up socks seems in good shape. Here she comes from the first eliminatories.

Lady, please, just a few words for the media. How was the first eliminatory?

(TGZ, panting) Better than I was expecting... (puff...puff...) At first I got nervous, because I wasn't understanding how to knit the toe, but as soon as I understood, it went fine... (shakes the muscles to relax)

(Journalist) I couldn't fail to notice that you have a different style of knitting. Which sparked some discussion among the jury.

(TGZ) It's true, but I've got confirmation that my style, being less usual, is accepted. I knit wrong side out, and using the information I collected here, I was able to invert all the pattern, so that I obtain the same result. It was exhilarating to see that K2tog and SSK on the RS looks exactly the same as SSP P2tog tbl on the WS.

(Journalist) I see you are more motivated. Good perspective of finishing your challenge in time?

(TGZ) Yes, my motivation grew when I saw that Portugal sent an athlete to the Torino Winter Olympics! But it is still early to know if I will be able to finish my challenge in time or not. I have other socks on the needles, and next weekens I will have a knitters meeting where I want to learn to make a 2-ply yarn, and that will take time that is needed for this challenge. And there's also the thesis... and classes that start again in a week!

I'm sorry, I must go to the showers!"

Olympic Newsflash 1

(em grego antigo, da Fyberduck/In ancient Greek, from Fyberduck)

Começa hoje às 19h (hora local)! It starts today at 19:00 (local time)!

Using the idea I found here, I will tell my progress like an interview (see rough English translation after the whole Portuguese version, sorry):

(TGZ) Muito obrigada!"

In English:
"(Journalist) There's a lot of bustling in the rooms of the small Portuguese team for the Knitting Olympics. In just 3 more hours, the Games will begin, so now is the time for the final preparations! Let's interview a young knitlete of the sock-knitting modality:

Good afternoon! It's the first time Portugal participates in the Winter (Knitting) Olympics! How does it feel to be a part of this historical event?

(TGZ) It's a great responsability, and I am very happy to be here!

(Journalist) On your case, when does the competition start?

(TGZ) To me it's tonight. As I'm going out for coffee with some friends after dinner, this means I must go home early, warm the pre-cooked dinner on the microwave and cast on immediately! That way, I can try to knit a bit more at the coffee-house! I must not loose time!

(Journalist) What will be your weaknesses and strengths?

(TGZ) One could say that my biggest weakness, besides inexperience (these will be my first toe-up socks, and my second pair of socks in general!), will be concentrating on this challenge. Truth is I am working in another sock pair which isn't finished yet, and spinning is a sport that I have recently fell in love with, to which I dedicate some time. My biggest strength is the fact that these socks will be knitted in larger size DPNs than the previous ones, and, of course, the stong motivation that the olympic village gives to you!

(Journalist) I will not take you more time. I wish you good luck and that you may be able to complete your challenge!

(TGZ) Thank you very much!"

Outros progressos/Other progresses

Cada vez gosto mais de fiar! / I love spinning, each day I love it more!

And finally I can reveal Noo's scarf, now that she has received it! (I post her photo, mine was ugly!)

Finally, I am amazed with the yarn handpainted by Filomena this weekend. They're so beautiful!

Meias, ainda/ More socks

1) Jaywalkers

O prazo do knit-along acaba no dia 14, creio. Para mim, vai ser difícil!
I finished one sock (it fought back, but I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot!) and started the second. I don't have enough yarn (I had to start using the second ball before the end of the first sock), but a friend is going to get a third ball of this yarn in a store that sells it. It's not going to be easy to finish the socks in time for the knit-along...

2) Knitting Olympics

It seems there are more than 3000 participants! And, being a slow sock knitter, I will probably not finish the (red) socks on the 26th, but quite after... Generously, the organizers (by mistake) wrote that my challenge is: tar.gzip - Toe. That's it, just the toe ;) I intend to break that record, though!

Filomena tagged me to answer this meme: 5 ideosyncrasies I have.

1) Trazer sempre os óculos de sol e uma lanterna na carteira./Always carry my sunglasses and a lantern in my handbag.

2) Comer o branco das laranjas (a parte de dentro das cascas); comer as rodelas de limão (só a "carne"!) que acompanham um prato./Eat the white of orange oranges; eat the lemon slices (just its "meat") that come with some meat or fish dishes.

E, se não estiver mais ninguém em casa, enquanto passo a ferro./Sing choral music (the alto part, which is my voice) while I vacuum. And, if I'm alone at home, while I iron, also.

Tenho moderado este hábito.../Repeat to myself what I am doing, in a low but audible voice. I never had noticed I did that until a friend told me, last year. ("Now I will put my things in order". "Now, put my seat belt"). I am moderating this habit, now...

5) Tomar banho de touca no cabelo, para depois lavar o cabelo em separado (obviamente quando fiz natação tomava banho e lavava o cabelo ao mesmo tempo, mas prefiro fazer em dois passos)./Shower with a cap in my hair, and then wash my hair separately (of course, when I was learning how to swim I showered and washed my hair at the same time, but I prefer to do it separately).

I tag all readers who have not answered this meme, and I would be very happy if, when you do answer this meme, you tell me so in the comments, so I can go check your blog!

Well, I broke the yarn diet. Just 3 skeins, of a viscose-mix yarn that will make a beautiful Picovoli...

But from now on I will behave!

Ganhei! / I won!

Aqui há dias a Mygomi, do Two Left Needles, fez um concurso.

Some days ago Mygomi, from Two Left Needles, had a contest. She wanted us to tell why did we think her blog is called "Two Left Needles".

O que eu disse foi isto: What I said was this:

.....
Well, I usually say I'm ambisinistrous, as in being 2-left-handed... What I mean is: I'm right-handed, but I do a lot of things the opposite way to how "normal people" do (when I was a child several teachers asked me if I was left-handed... I am not.).
So, when reading "2 left needles" I think of someone who knits like me: sometimes backwards, other times wrong side out, who prefers to purl rather than knit, to make increases and decreases in the purl side. Someone who makes things differently, in a way that looks clumsy and wrong, but still obtains good results and has a great deal of fun in it!

.....

E ganhei!

She let us choose one of these six prizes, and I chose the silk/mohair boucle. It has unexpected colours, it is soft, and I never had the chance to knit with silk! I will make a scarf for me (this one I will keep!).

I have been reading her blog with more attention and it inspires me to spin and dye. And one day (when I have more room, not now) I will have a spinning wheel as well! Isn't it pretty?
